IPSEC: IPSEC is a very powerful, industrial grade vpn protocol often used by corporations. While it will handle so I have been told DirectPlay and just about any other protocol, unless all participants have routers that can do IPSEC automatically, the software can be expensive and hard to setup. For the brave, there is a free IPSEC server package for Linux here and Microsoft does have some limited clients available for free.
