Our Kind of Traitor John le Carre Publisher: Viking Penguin, October 12, 2010 Review: Spymaster John le Carre returns with Our Kind of Traitor, a stunning tour de force about two people sucked into the dangerous world of dirty money and dirtier politics. It begins with a simple tennis match. In Antigua, on vacation, Gail and Perry have just finished their last set when they’re approached by a man named Dima who’s interested in a friendly game. Just a typical holiday encounter, they think, except Dima is anything but typical. He’s a big-time Russian money launderer, and he wants out. In exchange for amnesty, he’s ready to rat out his criminal compatriots…but he needs their help. As menacing and flawlessly paced as The Little Drummer Girl and as morally complex as The Constant Gardener, this is signature le Carre. In Under Heaven, Kay tells a dazzling, single-volume tale of ghosts and glory, honor and power, set in the Asian-inspired landscape of Imperial Kitai. The world could bring you poison in a jeweled cup, or surprising gifts. Sometimes you didn’t know which of them it was... To honor his deceased father, a general who led Imperial forces in their last great war, Shen Tai has spent two years alone at a battle site by a mountain lake, burying the dead of both armies. At night he can hear the ghosts moan and stir. When a voice falls silent, he knows that a ghost has been laid to rest. One morning he learns that his vigil has been noticed by the enemy’s court. In recognition of his courage and piety, and the honor done their dead, the Princess of Tagura has bestowed upon him two hundred and fifty coveted western horses. The Heavenly Horses are an overwhelming gift. They exalt Tai, and could bring him great power—or get him killed. It will take all of Tai’s cunning to survive the imperial court’s myriad webs of treachery and deceit...if he can get there alive. My Lost Daughter Nancy Taylor Rosenberg Publisher: St. Martin's Press, Llc, September 14, 2010 Review: With My Lost Daughter, suspense master Nancy Taylor Rosenberg strains our nerves to the limit as her most memorable character, Lily Forrester, struggles to balance the demands of a high-profile murder trial with the needs of her own child in crisis. She’s determined to see justice done in her current case, the sensational trial of a woman who killed her 2-year-old son. But she’s thrown for a loop when she receives word that her own daughter, Shana, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Pressured by the looming trial, she takes Shana to a supposedly prestigious treatment facility for evaluation and counseling. But then things go horribly awry. The institution Lily has chosen is far less interested in treating patients than with bilking the insurance companies out of extravagant fees—and they are less than scrupulous about patient’s rights. Discovering that Shana has been drugged without her consent, Lily must summon all her knowledge of the law to free her daughter. And she’ll have to work fast, because there’s a sociopath hiding at the facility…and Shana is his new obsession. But as usual, Rachel’s worldly path is littered with mayhem. A cop friend has been beaten nearly to death, probably by a supernatural, and as they dig, she and her partners—living vampire Ivy and pixy Jenks—find a banshee tear: evidence that the culprit may be a very difficult fiend to defeat. Back at the converted church that’s both her home and office, a ghost she once helped has a warning he can deliver only if Rachel gives him a body. Not only is it the bloodiest murder scene Alex has ever viewed, the carnage leaves no doubt that a terrifying new breed of killer has debuted with a level of depravity that rivals none. Fortunately, the one lead Alex has is a big one: It seems Ellie was working on a book about brutal massacres taking place in Central Africa. She believed they are being carried out by youth gangs for hire, most of them brainwashed and then trained to kill by an infamous mercenary known as “the Tiger.” Alex and his girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, are none too suprised to learn of the presence of the murderous warlord in D.C. when they slip into Washington's Nigerian underworld; clearly, he came for vengeance. Just as Alex closes in, the chameleon-like Tiger disappears—back to his home turf in Africa, leaving Alex no choice but to follow. Alone. If you've ever wondered why TIME has called James Patterson “the man who can't miss,” just pick up Cross Country. From page one, it's a heart-stopping trip you won't soon forget. Rumi: The Big Red Book Coleman Barks Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers, October 12, 2010 Review: Coleman Barks is famous for his renderings of Rumi’s beautiful poetry, and his work on these particular poems has never been published anywhere before. This book represents over 33 years of work on Rumi’s seminal classic. A collection of lyric poems and short quatrains, Rumi wrote these verses in honor of his spiritual teacher and soulmate, Shams Tabrizi, over the course of their 40-year friendship. In What Technology Wants, Kevin Kelly promotes this novel idea, and shows how it can serve as a tool to help humanity. Kelly shows how various technologies have developed over time, ranging from the shape of medieval European helmets to the increasing speed of transportation from Pony Express to interstellar spacecraft. Adopting the term “technium” to describe the sum total of human technology, he ponders what its long-term imperatives are and how we as a species can best align ourselves with them. Strikingly insightful and original, What Technology Wants takes a bold look at where today’s technology may lead. Creepiosity: A Hilarious Guide to the Unintentionally Creepy is a compendium of all sorts of eerie effluvia, and because all creepiness is not created equal, Bickel has handily invented an unnecessarily complicated mathematical formula (a “Creepiosity Index,” if you will) to quantify every item’s relative creepiness. From Dick Cheney’s curdled smile to sickly looking hairless cats, there’s something in here to creep out absolutely anyone! T Is for Trespass Sue Grafton Publisher: Putnam Pub Group/Mbr of Penguin Putnam, December 04, 2007 Review: Sue Grafton’s T Is for Trespass gets an “A” for addictive, as P.I. Kinsey Millhone goes up against the embodiment of evil in the series' most riveting entry to date. Despite the fact that Gus Vronsky is the neighborhood scrooge, concern for the old man after he injures himself moves Kinsey to agree to do a quick background check on the caregiver hired by his out-of-town niece. Based on Solana Rojas’s top-notch credentials, Kinsey gives the thumbs up—until she meets the woman and is taken aback by her querulous personality…and something disturbing in her glance. Furthermore, Kinsey finds it strange that Gus, a curmudgeon if ever there was one, appears more subdued of late—a lot more. Kinsey decides a possible license-revoking break-in and entry of Gus’ home is worth the risk. The discovery of a 300-pound goon sound asleep in a back bedroom only confirms her suspicions that Solana’s rave reviews are way off the mark. But actually, Solana Rojas is every bit the shining star she’s purported to be. The problem is that the woman living next door is not Solana Rojas. And by the time Kinsey puts it all together, it could cost her—big time. Explicit violence and language. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Choose Them Wisely Thoughts Become Things! The Liberators America's Witnesses to the Holocaust Michael Hirsh Publisher: Bantam Books, Inc./ Div Random Hous, March 01, 2010 Review: Review by Dennis Showalter Hirsh, combat veteran and combat reporter, military writer and award-winning journalist, interviewed over 150 American soldiers, in addition to nurses and camp survivors, to reconstruct an overlooked aspect of a familiar subject. The liberation of the German slave-labor camps in the closing days of World War II has approached mythic status. The reaction of generals, journalists, politicians, even Germans compelled to view the horrors, has been described repeatedly. Significantly overlooked, however, has been the impact of the camps upon their original liberators: the GIs who broke into the compounds and found themselves in the vestibule of Hell. These camps were not death centers. They were labor camps—small and middle-sized holding pens scattered throughout Germany to provide workers for the Nazi war machine. But make no mistake: the inmates had been consigned to death. Disease, exhaustion, starvation, or a bullet—the end was the same. As the Reich collapsed, so did the rudimentary camp administrations. Deliveries of even the pitiful allowances of food and clothing ceased. The behavior of increasingly desperate guards became increasingly random. So did the processes of dying. Most of the GIs who were first in spent no more than a few hours at the camps before moving on in pursuit of the German army. But they never forgot the sights and smells, the appearance of the inmates, and above all their own reactions. These men were no strangers to horror. As one tanker put it, when the 4th Armored fought the SS, it was to a finish. “…you killed them. If they got us, they did the same...” But now they were confronted with premeditated murder on scales at the limits of comprehension. How do you—realistically how do you—prepare for such an experience? Language itself failed these 18- and 20-year-olds. Certain phrases, “bodies stacked like cordwood,” are repeated to a point where they become tropes, losing some of their capacity to shock. Hirsh sustains immediacy by moving from camp to camp, letting the liberators tell their stories. There was no time to reflect. What counted was meeting immediate requirements: assessing the inmates’ needs, notifying rear echelons of the situation, collecting the dead—and occasionally dealing with any remaining guards or administrators. Reactions ran a gamut. “I got sick as a dog…. Throwing up my guts and saying ‘I never want to see another German as long as I live,’” recounted one infantryman. An ambulance driver for the American Field Services had been hardened by his war: “you couldn’t feel for [the victims] so much that you couldn’t do your job.” A member of the 120th Evacuation Hospital recorded that the survivors “wanted to respond by hugging you, and I was just afraid to get a disease from them.” But again and again Hirsh’s interview partners echoed the trooper from 11th Armored Division: “We’re just glad we got there when we did…we liberated that damn place.” Their story belongs in every library and collection on World War II. Three years later, the seventeen-year-old remains alienated from her parents, especially her father…until her mother decides it would be in everyone’s best interest if she and her little brother spent the summer in Wilmington with him. A former concert pianist, it breaks his heart that Ronnie, who shares his gift for music, refuses to play. But when Ronnie gets involved with the wrong crowd and winds up in trouble with the law, Steve’s belief in her innocence begins to melt the ice between them. BUY NOW!!! ========================= The Sun's Heartbeat And Other Stories from the Life of the Star That Powers Our Planet Bob Berman Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, July 13, 2011 Review: The Sun isn’t a living thing, but it does have a pulse: it alters its appearance and energy output in 11-year cycles and reverses its magnetic polarity every 22 years. This is just one remarkable insight you’ll find in The Sun’s Heartbeat, Bob Berman’s anecdote-rich celebration of the star that makes life on Earth possible. In a series of addictively readable chapters, we learn, for example, that the Sun emits most strongly in green light; yet it does not appear green because our eyes were designed by nature so that when the Sun’s primary colors—green, red and blue—strike the retina together, the mixture is perceived as white. Berman revisits the Sun’s birth: the process by which a cloud of hydrogen gas becomes a blinding ball of white fire the moment fusion begins. He also recounts the strange history of sunspot-spotting, involving a host of luminaries including Galileo, who engaged in a nasty battle of words with Christoph Scheiner over who saw them first. Berman explains why the 18th-century race to observe a transit of Venus across the Sun’s surface was crucial to determining the Sun-Earth distance, and he introduces us to the tachocline, a boundary layer inside the Sun—discovered only in 1989—that plays a key role in our star’s magnetic variation. In other parts of the book, Berman shares findings that the overuse of sunscreen may actually increase the incidence of skin cancer, and he recalls how Wolfgang Pauli came to theorize the solar particles known as neutrinos—20 trillion of which are flying through your brain every second. From the beauty of a total eclipse to the potential danger of geomagnetic storms, The Sun’s Heartbeat tells dramatic stories about the familiar star that crosses our sky daily. In other words, this is the book her fans have been anticipating. In 1984, an idyllic California community is rocked to its core when three children stumble upon the body of a woman buried in a shallow grave, her eyes and mouth glued shut. Concern for the traumatized 10-year-olds leads their teacher, Anne Navarre, to get involved with the investigation, which grows more intense once the local sheriff reveals this woman isn’t the killer’s first victim. And FBI agent Vince Leone, a trailblazer in criminal profiling, has only more bad news. He believes the cunning monster they seek could be a pillar of their community, like Dr. Peter Crane, who treated the victim the day she disappeared, or by-the-book patrolman Frank Farman. What’s more, both men are fathers of children who found the body, children who, out of fear or love—or both—may be concealing vital information. Knowing that the See-No-Evil killer could be among them, as Vince insists, has made Anne suspicious of everyone. But a monster wearing a mask is impossible to spot until, that is, he taps you on the shoulder. Inc., November 24, 2008 Review: Curiouser and curiouser!” Alice’s description of Wonderland applies equally well to the imagination of her creator, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), aka Lewis Carroll. In Lewis Carroll in Numberland, Robin Wilson proves that the man who gave us Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was an inventive mathematician and logician whose ideas are worth remembering. This highly original biography describes Carroll’s work in geometry, algebra, logic and other areas. Wilson also presents some of the puzzles and paradoxes with which he entertained his child-friends (including Alice Liddell) and contemporaries. Filled with striking and playful illustrations, Numberland is a celebration of the gifted mathematical side of this beloved author. Of these, 62—or 18%—reported experiences after the medical monitors had pronounced them dead. Dr. van Lommel published the results of his study, asserting that NDEs are authentic experiences which can’t be reduced to the imagination, psychosis or oxygen deficiency. In Consciousness Beyond Life, he explains how people who are clinically dead can be transformed, illustrating his argument with stories of those who have gone through an NDE. Our consciousness doesn’t always coincide with the functioning of our brain—consciousness beyond life is, in fact, a reality. Penn’s sons cast off their father’s Quaker heritage and began to acquire Indian lands through fraud, intimidation and the violence of the French and Indian War, while rapacious frontier settlers like the Paxton Boys resorted to outright massacre. Finally, the American Revolution brought total conquest. Based on extensive research in eighteenth-century primary sources, Peaceable Kingdom Lost offers an eye-opening look at how one man’s dream of two worlds, Old and New, living together in peace was lost forever.
