Bailey Ruth Raeburn has always been great at solving mysteries…so why should a little thing like her death change anything? In fact, being a ghost gives her a better opportunity to snoop unnoticed! Jacques Cousteau: The Sea King
Bild

Brad Matsen
Publisher: Pantheon Books Inc./Random House, October 20, 2009
Review: Explorer, ecologist and award-winning filmmaker, the late Jacques Cousteau is the most celebrated name in the world of undersea exploration, and rightly so, but there’s a lot more to him than his many documentaries and TV shows. Did you know he won the Croix de Guerre in World War II for spying on the Italian army? How about the fact that he trained as a fighter pilot? Were you aware Cousteau helped make scuba diving possible by co-developing the Aqua-Lung (and almost died while testing it)? The ultimate nature lover and a genuine visionary, Cousteau would ultimately become a legendary catalyst of the worldwide environmental movement.
With the cooperation of many of Cousteau's friends, family members and collaborators, Brad Matsen gives us a well-rounded, highly informed portrait of this eccentric genius and pioneer, who starred in hundreds of documentaries and published over 50 books. In Jacques Cousteau, he chronicles not only Cousteau’s incredible adventures and accomplishments, but also his various defeats and failures. Elegantly written, this book gives us an exceptionally complete picture of the man who almost single-handedly changed the way we view—and treat—our planet.

A Jane Austen Education

How Six Novels Taught Me About Love, Friendship, and The Things That Really Matter
William Deresiewicz
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA), May 02, 2011
Review: This eloquent memoir is a testament to the transformative power of literature. In A Jane Austen Education, scholar William Deresiewicz turns to the author’s novels to reveal the life lessons hidden within. Progressing from his days as an immature student to a happily married man, he reveals his initial reservations about Austen, and then his subsequent conversion to a full-fledged fanatic.
Austen’s devotion to the everyday riled something in Deresiewicz. He began viewing the world through Austen’s eyes and treating those around him as generously as Austen treated her characters. Soon enough, his life began to hold the same fascination as a novel. This book revels in the relevance of Austen’s message, and the triumph of her vision.

Then Again

Diane Keaton
Publisher: Random House Inc., November 15, 2011
Review: Reading Diane Keaton’s memoir is like sitting down with a special friend. The down-to-earth actress—who became a mother at 50—writes with candor about her move to New York to study acting, her Best-Actress-OSCAR®-winning role in Annie Hall, her bout with bulimia and, of course, her relationships with legends Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino.
Then Again is also a tribute to Keaton’s adored mother, Dorothy. A woman who always encouraged her four children to think and whose journals brought to life a fascinating family history spanning nearly 100 years, Dorothy raised a very American family with very American dreams. This memoir will remind you to celebrate your blessings and cherish those you love most. Photos.

Janet Evanovich
Publisher: St. Martin's Press, Llc, September 14, 2010
Review: What does Diesel get up to when he’s not hanging out with Stephanie Plum? Bestselling author Janet Evanovich gives us a hint with Wicked Appetite, book one of a magical new series!
Welcome to Marblehead, Massachusetts, where Elizabeth “Lizzy” Tucker, master cupcake baker and descendant of witches, lives in the 18th-century saltbox she inherited from her mysterious Great Aunt Ophelia. Life is pleasantly predictable for Lizzy…up early to bake the cupcakes, home early to test new recipes. Until two men show up in quick succession—tall, black-haired, ghostly pale Wulf and tall, blond, beach-tanned Diesel—each wanting what Lizzy has: knowledge. Seems that Lizzy unknowingly possesses the ability to find “empowered objects.” And a collection of stones representing the seven deadly sins needs finding. These stones, if brought together, have the power to unleash hell on earth. Wulf wants them, Diesel wants to stop him and Lizzy is the key to it all.
With two sexy, scary men, a possibly psychic one-eyed cat and a bad-mannered monkey named Carl to contend with—not to mention spells gone awry, cupcakes to bake and sudden wickedly powerful desires to fight—Lizzy’s life threatens to spin out of control!

The Centurion's Wife
Bild

Acts of Faith Series #1
Davis Bunn
Publisher: Bethany House Pub, January 01, 2009
Review: Janette Oke and Davis Bunn team up to create The Centurion’s Wife, a sweeping saga of the dramatic events surrounding the birth of Christianity…and the very personal story of Leah, a young Jewess of mixed heritage trapped in a vortex of competing political agendas and private trauma.
Caught up in the maelstrom following the death of an obscure rabbi in the Roman backwater of first-century Palestine, Leah finds herself facing the prospect of an arranged marriage to Alban, a Roman soldier who seems to care for nothing but his own ambitions. Head of the garrison near Galilee, he has been assigned by Palestine’s governor to ferret out the truth behind rumors of a political execution gone awry.
Leah’s mistress, the governor’s wife, also secretly assigns Leah to discover what really has become of this man whose death—and missing body—is causing such furor.
This epic drama is threaded with the tale of unlikely romance, dangers and betrayals from unexpected sources. At its core, The Centurion’s Wife unfolds the testing of loyalties between two young people whose inner longings they cannot express, and ultimately, between their humanity and the Divine forces they yearn to encounter.

Padre Pio

Miracles and Politics in a Secular Age
Sergio Luzzatto
Publisher: Metropolitan Books, November 09, 2010
Review: Italian Capuchin priest Padre Pio is one of the world’s most beloved holy figures. His tomb is the most visited Catholic shrine anywhere, drawing more devotees than Lourdes. Apparently, he had the ability to fly. In fact, it’s been said that an apparition of Padre Pio in midair prevented Allied warplanes from dropping bombs on his hometown during World War II. It’s also been said he could be present in two places at once, but most notable were his stigmata, hailed by millions as God-given.
Sergio Luzzatto’s investigation of this remarkable man offers a nuanced examination of modern-day mysticism, a striking analysis of the links between Catholicism and politics and an exploration of what it means to be a saint in our time.

In Search of the Church's Strangest Relic in Italy's Oddest Town
David Farely
Publisher: Gotham Books, Penguin Putnam Inc, July 09, 2009
Review: In December 1983, a priest in the Italian hill of Calcata was shocked and horrified to find that the pride of their town, the foreskin of Jesus, had been stolen. Accusations flew wildly. Many blamed Satanists. Others thought that the priest himself was to blame. Some even pointed fingers at the Vatican.
In 2006, travel writer David Farley moved to Calcata in search of the missing foreskin, and the result is An Irreverent Curiosity. Farley recounts the relic’s storied past, from Charlemagne to the papacy to a marauding 16th-century German soldier to its home in Calcata, and the book interweaves this strange history with his own travels. The result is perhaps the oddest story in all of Christian lore.

A Bed-and-Breakfast Mystery
Mary Daheim
Publisher: Morrow, August 09, 2011
Review: All the Pretty Hearses, 26th in Mary Daheim’s beloved Bed-and-Breakfast Mystery series, finds Judith McMonigle Flynn handling a case more tangled than guest room sheets!
It all starts when she donates an overnight stay at Hillside Manor to the parish school’s annual auction—and the winning bid goes to the persnickety Paines family. Dinner is included, if she can sort through the endless allergies and aversions listed by the unbearable Paines. Judith can’t help but dread the whole affair, since her P.I. husband, Joe, isn’t there to help.
Joe was doing surveillance on an insurance fraud suspect when a .38 Smith & Wesson blew the man away. Unfortunately, the gun belongs to Joe, who now finds himself in jail!
These aren’t Judith’s only problems. She also has to deal with her cantankerous mother, Gertrude; a horse the Paines have stabled in her garage; cousin Renie, who’s trying to force her loathsome Shrimp Dump recipe into the parish cookbook; and neighbor Arlene Rankers, who wants to know why some school kids, including her grandson, are sick after the weekly hamburger lunch.
With all this on her plate, Judith wonders what else can go wrong. Maybe the question should be, can anything go right?

The Cambridge Companion to Thomas Jefferson
Bild

Publisher: Cambridge University Press, January 31, 2009
Review: Thomas Jefferson lived a distinguished—and very busy—life. A lawyer, legislator, writer and politician, he was, at his core, a life-long learner, whose passions included education, science, philosophy, religion and architecture. The Cambridge Companion to Thomas Jefferson is an in-depth exploration of perhaps the most well-rounded of all the Founding Fathers.
Readers will come away with a deeper understanding of Jefferson’s ideas, ideals and accomplishments, as well as his uniquely open and “modern” mindset. For instance, he is famous for establishing the University of Virginia, but lesser known is the fact that he also (unsuccessfully) negotiated for the transfer of the entire faculty of the University of Geneva (threatened at the time by the progress of the French Revolution) from Europe to the United States—a truly “global” way of thinking in a time when a voyage across the Atlantic took weeks or even months.
And Jefferson, we know, vociferously stressed the importance of separation of church and state. But what was behind this strong belief? He believed that reason and science were integral parts of religion and saw Jesus as a great historical figure, writing, “the doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend all to the happiness of man.” Jefferson’s conclusions about religion shaped his policy and political beliefs, especially that all men are created equal. But he also saw human agenda and flaws in the original stories contained in the Bible. In fact, parts of the good book so distressed him that he wrote his own version of the gospels, Jefferson Bible.
Written by 15 distinguished Jefferson scholars, the essays in The Cambridge Companion to Thomas Jefferson examine the gamut of Jefferson’s writing, from the Declaration of Independence to private letters written to friends—as well as foes. Many address the scholarly disagreements surrounding Jefferson’s public and private positions on issues like Native Americans and slavery, bringing to light a depth of character and a personal philosophy far ahead of its time. Other chapters address the many ways in which Jefferson’s opinions and works shaped the young nation he helped create and which still influence the many issues America and the world face today.
A true product of the Age of Enlightenment, Jefferson stood out among a group of truly remarkable individuals for his unswerving tolerance of others’ belief systems (as long as it did not trample on individual liberties); openness to and curiosity of new ideas; and untiring dedication to learning and, in many cases, practicing the latest in scientific advancement. The Cambridge Companion to Thomas Jefferson is an ideal tool for anyone who wishes to delve even deeper into the mind of one of our most influential figures.

Life, on the Line

A Chef's Story of Chasing Greatness, Facing Death, and Redefining the Way We Eat
Grant Achatz
Publisher: Gotham Books, Penguin Putnam Inc., March 03, 2011
Review: In 2007, chef Grant Achatz really seemed to have it all. He and Nick Kokonas opened the conceptually radical restaurant Alinea in 2005, which was subsequently named Best Restaurant in America by Gourmet magazine. The eatery was a smash and Achatz was placed squarely in the world’s culinary spotlight—only to then be diagnosed with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma—tongue cancer. The prognosis was grim.
Absolutely determined to preserve his quality of life, Grant undertook a treatment of aggressive therapy and radiation, but the choice came at a cost: alarmingly, he lost his sense of taste. Tapping into the discipline and focus of being a chef, Grant rarely missed a day of work, and trained his chefs to mimic his palate, slowly learning to cook using his other senses.
The food, as it turns out, was never better. Five months later, Grant was declared cancer-free, and won the James Beard Foundation Outstanding Chef in America Award a few months later. His memoir, Life, on the Line, tells the gripping story of the culinary giant’s undying love affair with cooking, but it’s also an inspirational tale of survival, friendship and nurturing creativity.

L. Douglas Keeney
Publisher: St. Martins Press, Llc, February 01, 2011
Review: Review by Dennis Showalter
During the Cold War’s first half, America’s nuclear deterrent was essentially based on an airborne capacity sufficient to annihilate the Soviet Union even as a second-strike option. Freelance historian Keeney describes the Strategic Air Command (SAC) of General Curtis LeMay as shaped by three events: the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the destruction of Hiroshima by a single bomb and the fact—still a point of quiet pride in the contemporary USAF—that no bombing mission launched in World War II had ever turned back.
Keeney combines archival research in recently declassified sources and extensive interviews with former SAC members to describe a culture that developed with “its own tempo, its own timing, and its own sense of how things were done.” He presents the increasing tempo of SAC missions as the Cold War intensified, the policy of giving particular crews specific Soviet targets, and the intensifying debate within SAC on the virtues of preemptive strike, as opposed to retaliation.
The cycle of readiness and reaction grew steadily tighter. By the mid-1950s a B-52 had only 15 minutes to take off in the face of a Soviet nuclear attack. That led to a policy of keeping nukes in the air at all times, accepting the risk of accidents and the necessity of explanations. The increasing size of nuclear bombs and the increasing pace of nuclear testing led to the creation of anodyne vocabularies designed to make atomic detonations routine, harmless, business as usual. But by 1959 Congress was informed that the U.S. had enough nuclear weapons to annihilate the USSR ten times over.
Accidents kept happening. A 1954 test off Eniwetok contaminated nearby islands and a Japanese fishing boat. A B-47 with two plutonium capsules disappeared over the Atlantic. Two bombs jettisoned into the same ocean by a C-124 with engine trouble have never been found. There were others—many others, some concealed and some bagatellized. From the early 1960s, however, the manned bomber began to take second place to the ICBM.
In part the missiles were a response to exponentially decreasing reaction times. In part as well missiles seemed less susceptible to human and mechanical shortcomings. As the Vietnam War developed, SAC’s bomber fleet was increasingly diverted to supporting the ground war in Southeast Asia. In January 1968, SAC removed nuclear weapons from its alert bombers. An age of missile-driven Mutual Assured Destruction shaped the remaining years of Cold War confrontation.
Keeney is fully—and legitimately—convinced a full-scale nuclear exchange would have meant “We are struck; we strike back. There it would end...machines firing the last salvos against machines.” Yet he gives Curtis LeMay and SAC a share of the credit for the first nuclear age ending with an anticlimax. Neither Washington nor Moscow ever doubted SAC would do what it said it could do. That “inextinguishable war machine” was the cause of the mutual caution that made mutual deterrence effective. In the new century nothing has yet replaced it.

Laurell K. Hamilton
Publisher: Del Rey Books, November 01, 2000
Review: A pulse-pounding new series from the best-selling author of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, novels
"Everyone wants to grow up to be a faerie princess. Trust me. It's overrated."
L.A. is a place where people come to hide. Princess Meredith NicEssus came to hide, and she succeeded. Three years ago, she fled the high court of Faerie, running as far as the Pacific Shore, stopped only by the fact that if she used her passport, the Board of Human-Fey Affairs would notify her relatives. And her relatives would kill her.
Now, as Merry Gentry, she's a private investigator for the Grey Detective Agency: Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions. Her magical skills, scorned at the courts of Faerie, are valued in the human world. Nothing flashy; flashy attracts too much attention. She dare not even whisper her real name after dark for fear it'll reach the ear of her aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, who wants her dead. Why, Merry doesn't know.
Ironic, isn't it? Rumor has it that she is dead; sightings of the Princess Meredith are now more popular than sightings of Elvis. But Merry knows that, sooner or later, the Queen's Guard will track her down and take her home. And that's when the running will stop and the fighting begin.... Warning: Explicit sex and violence. (435 pp.)

Imagine Your Life Without Fear
Max Lucado
Publisher: Thomas Nelson Inc., September 08, 2009
Review: Envision a time when you could trust more and fear less. New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado helps you make that a reality, teaching you to respond to the threats of our unsettled world with faith—not fear.
Each sunrise seems to bring fresh reasons for more fear to intrude itself into our lives—layoffs at work, slowdowns in the economy, flare-ups in the Middle East, downturns in the housing market and upswings in global warming. The plague of our day, terrorism, begins with the word terror. Fear, it seems, has taken up a long-term lease on the building next door and set up shop.
Oversized and rude, fear herds us into a prison of unlocked doors. Wouldn’t it be great to walk out? Imagine your life untouched by anxiety, with faith as your consistent reaction to threats? The good news is, you can walk out of your prison of fear. Max Lucado points the way.
As you read chapters like “Fear of Overwhelming Challenges,” “Fear of Not Protecting My Kids” and “Fear of Global Calamity,” it will seem as if you’ve passed a magnet over your heart, extracting every last shaving of dread and insecurity. You’ll come to know, beyond all doubt, that a loving Father is always by your side.

Finding Fearlessness in the Face of Change
Bodhipaksa
Publisher: Sounds True Inc., September 28, 2010
Review: To face reality is to embrace change. To resist change is to suffer. This is the liberating insight that Bodhipaksa unfolds with Living as a River. A masterful investigation of the nature of self, this eloquent blend of science and spiritual insight will help free you from the fear of impermanence in a world defined by change.
The primary vehicle for the journey is Buddhism's traditional Six Element Practice, a process of deep reflection to help you let go of the belief in a separate, static self—the root of unhappiness. This systematic yet poetic analysis of the self is an empowering guide and a meditative practice you’ll turn to again and again to overcome fear of change, and joyfully align with the natural unfolding of creation.

Searching for America's Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens
Andrew Beahrs
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA), June 24, 2010
Review: During a tour of Europe in 1879, a homesick Mark Twain composed a fantasy menu of the American dishes he missed the most. A love letter to American cuisine, his menu consisted of some 80 regional dishes, including San Francisco mussels, lake trout from Tahoe, canvasback-duck from Baltimore, Virginia bacon and black bass from Mississippi.
Intrigued by the menu, food writer Andrew Beahrs set out to discover whether eight of these forgotten regional specialties can still be found on American tables. Weaving together passages from Twain’s books and Beahrs’ own adventures, Twain’s Feast takes readers on a journey into America’s past, to a time when foods taken fresh from grasslands, woods and waters were at the heart of our cooking.

FDR v. The Constitution
Bild

The Court-Packing Fight and the Triumph of Democracy
Burt Solomon
Publisher: Walker & Company, January 01, 2009
Review: Review by Lucas A. Powe, Jr.
Three months after his landslide 1936 reelection victory, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed expanding the number of Supreme Court justices from nine to fifteen. The Court-packing plan was a direct response to a conservative majority on the Court that had invalidated ten major New Deal statutes, including its industrial and agricultural centerpieces, in the previous two years and seemed poised to finish off the rest of the New Deal in the next year or so. There was no ground swell of support for the plan, but Roosevelt’s coattails had resulted in 3-1 Democratic majorities in both the House and the Senate and thus Court-packing should have passed. But it didn’t, and Burt Solomon’s FDR v. the Constitution: The Court-Packing Fight and the Triumph of American Democracy is a brisk and full retelling of the story of its defeat. Indeed, this is the first full-scale retelling since the contemporaneous The 168 Days by two reporters.
A cartoon shows FDR rehearsing his six new smiling justices. He instructs: “Great! Now, once more, all together.” The six exclaim “Yes!” in unison. The Constitution and the Scales of Justice are partially visible in a trash barrel. That, indeed, is how many perceived FDR’s plan.
Republicans were aghast at the plan, but too few to matter. What mattered was opposition by a number of progressive Senators, especially Montana’s Burton Wheeler. The Chief Justice, Charles Evans Hughes (one of the most distinguished men ever to grace the Court), turned out to be a superior politician than he had been while losing the presidency to Woodrow Wilson in 1916. He was instrumental in helping Wheeler oppose FDR. Most importantly, Justice Owen Roberts switched his votes from 1935 and 1936, and voted with Hughes and three liberals to sustain a state minimum wage for women, the National Labor Relations Act, and the unemployment compensation provisions of the Social Security Act. To his dismay, Roberts would be forever known as “the switch in time that saved nine.
FDR v. the Constitution notwithstanding, FDR did not oppose the Constitution. He opposed the Court’s highly restrictive interpretations of the Constitution. As he told an aide right after the second inaugural, “when the Chief Justice read me the oath and came to the words ‘support the Constitution of the United States’ I felt like saying: ‘Yes, but it’s the Constitution as I understand it, flexible enough to meet any new problem of democracy—not the kind of Constitution your Court has raised up as a barrier to progress and democracy.’” FDR got that Constitution while Hughes kept his nine-member Court. Burt Solomon has authored a highly readable book about a signal event in American constitutional history. Anyone interested in either the New Deal or Constitutional Law should read FDR v. The Constitution—and, with Solomon (and the afore-mentioned cartoon), celebrate its outcome.

Publisher: Bantam Dell Pub Group, July 29, 2008
Review: An enjoyable Austen homage, with touches of Bronte and Lovecraft added for good measure, The Magicians and Mrs. Quent weaves a dazzling spell of adventure and suspense, evoking a world of high magick and genteel society, where one young woman discovers that her modest life is far more extraordinary than she ever imagined.
Of the three Lockwell sisters—romantic Lily, prophetic Rose and studious Ivy—it’s the eldest, book-loving Ivy, who has held the family together since their father’s descent into madness. They all know he had been doing magick when he lost his mind, but only Ivy believes that magick can bring it back. Mr. Lockwell had been a respected doctor, a man of science, and from her girlhood, he had taught Ivy that any problem might be solved by applying sound logic and diligent investigation.
So, while caring for her family and maintaining their dwindling fortunes, Ivy seeks the dark reason behind her father’s illness. She has no time for romance. Yet fate has greater plans, and when Ivy takes a job with the reclusive Alasdare Quent, she discovers that her quest is linked to a secret society of highwaymen, revolutionaries, illusionists and spies…and the future of her island nation.

Chester Gould
Publisher: Idea And Design Works, Llc, November 01, 2006
Review: Years before W.R. Burnett wrote about cops, decades before Jack Webb and Ed McBain became the respective masters of TV and prose police procedurals, one granite-jawed cop reigned supreme among newspaper comic strips—Dick Tracy. The brainchild of a young artist named Chester Gould, Dick Tracy’s tough detectives, hard-boiled action and relentless melodrama made it one of the most popular, influential comics of the 20th century. Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Maus, calls it “one of America's singular artistic achievements.
Now you can revisit the full glory of Dick Tracy’s early career with The Complete Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy®, Volume One. In this deluxe hardcover edition, you’ll find nearly 600 comic strips—all the Dailies and Sundays from 1931 to 1933—kicked off by the five sample strips Gould used to sell his groundbreaking series. Among them are the first appearance of many long-time Dick Tracy characters, such as Tess Truehart, Junior and Chief Brandon. Featuring an introduction from writer Max Allan Collins and a never-before-published interview between Collins and Chester Gould, this special edition is must-have for Tracy aficionados and comic strip fans alike.

Craig Seymour was a grad student when he decided to drop the books—and his pants—and moonlight as a stripper in the infamously anything-goes gay strip clubs of 1990s Washington, D.C. Soon he was g-string-deep in a world of gay-for-pay dancers, divorces with double lives and customers nicknamed Mr. Tickles. But it wasn't all wild times, hot guys and easy money: He still had to hide from his parents, maintain a relationship and deal with prostitution, porn—and his Ph.D.
Now a respected English professor and journalist, Seymour bares all once again in All I Could Bare—an explicit, entertaining and insightful memoir about losing your inhibitions and finding yourself.

The Hitler I Knew
Bild

Memoirs of the Third Reich's Press Chief
Otto Dietrich
Publisher: Skyhorse Publishing, May 01, 2010
Review: Journalist Otto Dietrich entered Adolf Hitler’s circle of confidants in 1931, through an introduction by Rudolf Hess. Two years later, Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany, and Dietrich served as Hitler’s press chief until 1945—he was dismissed only days before the ignominious deaths of Hitler and Eva Braun.
At the end of the war, imprisoned and disillusioned, Otto Dietrich wrote down what he had seen and heard in 12 years of close association with Hitler, to be published after his death. The remarkable result is The Hitler I Knew. The first half of the book recounts the rise and fall of Hitler as politician, ruler and military strategist—ground well trodden, but this time with the dictator’s confidant as our guide. The second half probes the personality of the enigmatic Fuhrer, “out of a thousand details of Hitler’s public and private life.
The author traces the beginning of Hitler’s despotic tendencies to the June 30, 1934, purge of the armed forces. Subsequently, protestations of peace were replaced by preparations for war, as Hitler’s “Anglophobia” increased and as he commenced his program of state-sponsored anti-Semitism (Dietrich exonerates his countrymen for the events of Kristallnacht, attributing them entirely to Hitler and claiming that “the overwhelming majority of the German people considered [the attacks] disgusting and shameful”). This is an example of a theme running throughout the book, as the author asserts that every one of Hitler’s decisions was unilateral, without input or counsel from advisers. Clearly emerging is the portrait of a leader who, years before attaining power, had such confidence that he would command the nation that he had already drawn up detailed policy statements and massive construction plans.
Ultimately, Dietrich characterizes the Fuhrer as “a demonic personality obsessed by racial delusions” and a singular lust for power that trumped any desire for riches or personal comforts. In Dietrich’s judgment, such delusions blinded Hitler to the evil of his actions.
Without question, Dietrich remained an apologist for the aspects of National Socialism that he found more palatable. He suggests repeatedly that the racist aspects of the ideology were not integral to the whole, and he ascribes benevolent motives to many of the regime’s early actions. Nevertheless, he acknowledges the harm done by his work as a publicist for the dictator and in his 1933 hagiography, With Hitler on the Road to Power, and the toll the work incurred on Dietrich’s conscience. Thus, he seeks here to “dispel the last shreds of glamour from the myth of Hitler.” While the present work cannot excuse Dietrich’s involvement, his direct, personal experience of life at the heart of the Reich makes for compelling reading.
