Finding Favor, Restoration, and Abundance in Your Life Every Day
Joel Osteen
Publisher: Simon And Schuster, Inc., November 03, 2009
Review: If you haven’t been hit hard by the economic downturn yourself, you probably know someone who has. But tough times can serve as catalysts for creativity and new levels of achievement that make for better lives and a better world.
That’s why Joel Osteen has written It’s Your Time—to give you strength no matter what you’re going through right now. His goal is to motivate you and help you see that God’s plan is at work in your life. You may feel that you don’t have what it takes to emerge stronger, but with God by your side, you will prevail.
It’s Your Time is divided into five parts, each building on the other, beginning with “It’s Time to Believe,” because tough times require the faith that big problems precede good things to come. “It’s Time for Favor” fortifies your faith, while “It’s Time for Restoration” provides what you need to bounce back from reversals. “Time to Trust” reminds you that all things work together for good in God’s plan and finally, ”It’s Time to Stretch” motivates you to stretch to grow and find your place of blessing in the coming year.
This is your time to expect God’s goodness, and It’s Your Time is your manual for opening your heart to receive it.

An Unlikely Prince

The Life and Times of Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Capponi
Publisher: Da Capo Press Inc., June 27, 2010
Review: Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli remains one of history’s most inscrutable figures. In An Unlikely Prince, acclaimed scholar Niccolo Capponi—a direct descendant of Machiavelli—analyzes the political theorist in the context of his own times.
Capponi reveals a complex figure—a skillful diplomat and an inept liar; a sharp thinker and an impractical dreamer; a hard-nosed power broker and a risk-taking gambler; a calculating propagandist and an imprudent jokester. Capponi’s portrait also shows how Machiavelli’s outlook was ultimately provincial—in fact, utterly un-Machiavellian—and how, in the end, he was baffled by the international success of The Prince.
An Unlikely Prince frees this fabled figure from centuries of misinterpretation.

Caesar's Murder and the War for Rome
Stephen Dando-Collins
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., February 15, 2010
Review: Review by Thomas R. Martin
The Ides of March 44 B.C. ranks as the most infamous date in ancient history. The reason, of course, is the notoriety of Julius Caesar, who was assassinated on that day. It remains controversial whether that murder was justified—if indeed murder can ever be justified—as a defense of the political liberty of the Roman Republic. Answering this question requires an evaluation of Caesar’s career, the motives of the men who conspired to kill him—the self-proclaimed “liberators”—and the history and political character of the Republic itself.
Since books addressing this question continue to pour out, it is remarkable that Stephen Dando-Collins has produced an engagingly innovative approach to it. He focuses tightly on a two-year period encompassing the months leading up to the murder of Caesar, and then its bloody aftermath through the final military defeat of the conspirators. After a brief introduction, he presents 58 short chapters in strict chronological order, each linked to a specific date starting with January 26, 44 B.C. and ending with October 1-21, 42 B.C. A final concise chapter judges the assassins and their victim.
Relevant information on Roman history and society is interspersed throughout the chapters, but the calendar rules the arrangement of the material. This generates a detailed narrative based on the ancient sources, which is made more dramatic by the author’s vivid historical imagination in reconstructing the ancient setting. It all works in narrating an exciting series of events that had enormous consequences for the Roman world.
Dando-Collins’ judgments are as energetic as his reconstructions. For him, Caesar and his fellow politicians in the late Republic were thoroughly corrupt. To be honest, this judgment is more an assertion than an argument based on a thorough analysis of Roman politics, which admittedly was not the goal in this book. More startling is the suggestion that Caesar may have been seriously mentally ill, to the point of having dangerous delusions of grandeur.
In the end, his evaluation of Caesar is bleak: the famed Roman was a violent tyrant whose poor decisions about policy and friends brought on his violent death. The assassins come off somewhat better, as tyrant slayers with noble, if naive, motives. Their failure—and here his view is surely correct—was to think that all they needed to do to restore a stable freedom to the Republic was to murder Caesar. They had no plan about what to do next, and, as Dando-Collins concludes, the assassination simply opened the way to new tyranny.
It seems possible to ask whether so much blame should attach to Caesar; his policies were after all constrained by the unsolvable paradoxes of the political power structure of the Roman Republic. Whatever one thinks of him, however, this novel description of the history of his murder and its immediate aftermath makes for provocative reading.

A Marine's Memoir of Combat and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Clint Van Winkle
Publisher: St. Martin's Press Inc., March 01, 2009
Review: Marine Sergeant Clint Van Winkle’s battalion was among the first wave of troops to cross into Iraq. After two years of duty, certain images would not leave his mind: the shooting of a little girl, bodies lying on streets, mistakenly stepping on a “soft spot,” the remains of a Marine killed in combat. Taking its title from this last harrowing memory, Soft Spots follows Van Winkle after his return home, as he seeks help at a V.A. facility, and so begins a maddening journey through a system whose promises to care for veterans so often ring hollow.
From riveting combat scenes to the gallows humor to moments from a civilian life ravaged by flashbacks, rage and doubt, Soft Spots reveals the mind of a soldier like no other Iraq war memoir.

Cold Vengeance
Bild

Douglas Preston
Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, August 02, 2011
Review: Aloysius Pendergast, the world’s most enigmatic FBI Special Agent, returns in Cold Vengeance as he continues the search for the truth about his late wife, only to discover that her past is far stranger than he ever imagined.
It begins in the moors of Scotland, as Pendergast goes on a seemingly innocent hunting trip with his brother-in-law, Justin Esterhazy. Except, as always, things are not as they seem. Within a few pages, we learn that they’re not really hunting deer—they’re hunting each other. Unfortunately for Pendergast, Esterhazy gets first blood, and as he watches Pendergast sink into the bog with a terrible chest wound, he leaves him with a shocking revelation that changes everything Pendergast thought he knew about his wife's life...and death!
Left for dead, Pendergast manages to escape, but as he continues hunting Esterhazy, retribution is no longer his only objective. Now, he has a larger goal. Little does he realize that this search will lead to some unpleasant truths—and an unexpected foe. And as Cold Vengeance, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s aptly named thrill ride, speeds to its heart-stopping conclusion, only one thing’s for sure—nothing will ever be the same again.

The Kitchen House

Kathleen Grissom
Publisher: Touchstone/Imp Simon & Schuster, February 02, 2010
Review: A debut novel of uncommon skill, Kathleen Grissom’s The Kitchen House is a beautifully written, emotionally wrenching coming-of-age story—set on a Virginia plantation during the late 18th century—that sheds new perspective on an often forgotten part of our history.
It is 1790, and Lavinia, a 7-year-old girl, has just come off a ship from Ireland with no parents and no memory of her past. Taken to a tobacco plantation, she’s quickly put to work as an indentured servant, living with the kitchen house slaves under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter. Soon, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded with her new family, even though she realizes that she’s forever set apart by her white skin. But as time passes and she slowly gains acceptance into the big house, she finds herself caught in uncharted territory, straddling two very different worlds that neither trust nor understand the other. Marrying the master’s troubled son—and taking on the role of mistress—only makes things worse. Now, as her two worlds collide, long-standing loyalties are torn, hidden truths are laid bare and a shocking act of violence forever changes the deceptive peace of the plantation.

Big Nate in a Class by Himself

Lincoln Peirce
Publisher: Harper Collins Childrens Bks., March 30, 2010
Review: Fans of the ever popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, rejoice: there’s a new outspoken sixth grader in the classroom and his name is Big Nate. He’s destined for great things, but first, he has to survive his dad’s toxic oatmeal, defuse an unfortunate situation with his least favorite teacher (the horrifying Mrs. Godfrey—aka Godzilla) and figure out what to say when he body slams the principal. At this rate, Nate will be lucky to make it through the day.
Sure, many of us would love to forget that middle school ever happened, but Lincoln Peirce deserves an A+ for making it fun and funny. So funny, in fact, that Big Nate Is In a Class By Himself has got Jeff Kinney (Mr. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, himself!) singing its praises. (Ages 9-12)

The Extraordinary Story of Anne Frank's Family
Mirjam Pressler
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc./Random House, February 08, 2011
Review: Review by Dennis Showalter
Some version of it comes to all families. An aged parent passes, leaving a lifetime’s artifacts and curiosities. But when Gerti Elias cleaned out the attic of her late mother-in-law, she discovered historians’ gold. Helene Elias was the sister of Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. Their mother, Alice, was the family matriarch and the clearinghouse for news from her four children. They visited her regularly. They sent photos and drawings. They wrote voluminously. Alice saved all of it—a sheet anchor for a way of life disrupted, then destroyed. Helene preserved it. And Mirjam Pressler, award-winning German author and translator, edited an inchoate mass of material into a compelling literary and historical mosaic.
Treasures from the Attic tells the story of a family scattered to the corners of Europe by the Great Depression, the rise of the Nazis and the Holocaust. Yet the Franks had centuries-deep roots in Germany, and in Frankfurt. The first third of the book reconstructs the family’s rise into a German-Jewish upper bourgeoisie that flourished during the Second Empire. From peddlers they rose to businessmen; Anne’s grandfather Michael became a banker. The Franks saw no contradiction between Jewish and German identities. Germany had been good to the family, and the Franks reciprocated. Michael’s support of military charities was recognized before his death in 1909 by Kaiser Wilhelm himself. Otto and his two brothers served in World War I; Alice was a volunteer nurse. All returned home safely. But the economic and political circumstances of the early 1930s impelled fundamental changes.
The Franks’ businesses felt the pinch of the Depression. The Nazis took over the government of Germany. Antisemitism flourished in Frankfurt. Otto sought a fresh start in the Netherlands. Helene’s husband, Erich Elias, relocated to Basel; Alice joined them in 1933. With another son in Paris and the fourth in London, the Franks were well on their way to becoming “rootless cosmopolitians.” Their emotional links to Germany were ruptured by a Third Reich of boycotts and pogroms, with worse on the horizon. Their everyday stories, the surface coping and the underlying fear, found their way into the random boxes of Alice’s “archive.
The outbreak of war meant a “time without letters,” a time when rumors became apocalyptic. The emigre brothers in Paris and London survived. Otto hinted at his plans to create a hiding place in Amsterdam. But not until 1945 did Alice and Helene learn that from the “Secret Annexe” only Otto still lived. His correspondence eloquently conveys the agony of seeking and learning the details of his family’s betrayal and fate; his growing absorption by Anne’s recovered diary; and the everyday stones in the road of starting over in a memory-haunted world.
The book’s third section focuses on Helene’s son and Anne’s cousin, Buddy Elias. Influenced but not dominated by Anne’s legacy, he emerges as a good man who made a successful life. But that life reflected two post-Holocaust mantras no European Jew can afford to forget: you can’t let yourself get depressed—and you can’t let yourself get comfortable.

A Frank Quinn Novel
John Lutz
Publisher: Pinnacle Books, July 26, 2011
Review: When you're reading a crime novel, how do you know you're in the hands of a master storyteller? When a strand of fear coils around your spine and refuses to let go, even in your most relaxed moments. Multiple Edgar®- and Shamus-Award winner John Lutz is just such a writer, and Serial, his latest Frank Quinn thriller, is just such a book.
Restaurant hostess Millie Graff comes home from work one afternoon to find a naked stranger in her apartment—a maniac who gags her, violates her and subjects her to horrific torture, leaving her mutilated body with two signature clues. Nailing the killer is priority number one for the NYPD. Only the best investigator will do—and that means Frank Quinn.
Quinn wouldn't want it any other way…because Millie Graff is no faceless victim. Fifteen years ago, as a homicide detective, Quinn risked his life to pull an 11-year-old girl from a burning car. Now this killer has taken away forever the precious life that Quinn had saved. For him, this time it’s personal.
Quinn knows he’s up against a truly twisted mind. As the body count rises, he realizes it's not the ritual weapon that makes this killer so disturbing. It's who he kills—and how he makes them suffer.

How the Mind Grows From Conception to College
Sandra Aamodt
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, September 13, 2011
Review: The growth and maturation of a child’s brain is an intricate process taking decades. In Welcome to Your Child’s Brain, Sandra Aamodt and Sam Wang cover the entire period from conception to college, detailing everything from sleep problems and language acquisition to gender differences and autism.
The authors organize the book into seven parts. The first, introductory section, shows how a two-way conversation between genes and environment shapes neural development throughout childhood. The book goes on to describe the experiences a child’s brain uses to shape the development of sleeping, eating habits, walking and talking. From there, we turn to the refinement of a child’s eyesight, the importance of hearing and touch in shaping the brain, and the formation of flavor preferences.
How does the act of play help the brain develop? Aamodt and Wang show us, and give us a look at the effects of electronic entertainment on a child’s mental growth. And if you’ve ever wondered about the challenges young people face when trying to master their emotions or self-control, the book has some answers. What explains a child’s aptitude—or lack thereof—for music, mathematics and reading? You’ll read all about it here. The final section explores some of the things that can go wrong on the path to adulthood, including ADHD and other disorders.
Along the way, we learn that educational videos for babies probably do more harm than good; how a moderate amount of stress is actually good for helping to develop a child’s coping skills; what the best predictor of academic success is (hint: not IQ); and more.
With practical advice for parents with kids ages 0 to 21, Welcome to Your Child’s Brain challenges myths and reveals surprising insights.

Review: There’s more to James Garner than The Rockford Files. Garner left an abusive home at 14, and went on to become Oklahoma’s first Korean-War draftee, earning two Purple Hearts for his injuries. After returning to the U.S., Garner settled in Los Angeles and began his ascent to Hollywood stardom.
In The Garner Files, the actor recalls his life through a wealth of anecdotes: “trying to decipher” William Wyler with Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine; breaking Doris Day’s ribs; having a “heart-to-heart and eyeball-to-eyeball” with Steve McQueen and much more.
Featuring an Introduction by Julie Andrews, whose work with Garner includes Victor/Victoria, this rich biography opens a window on one of Hollywood’s most fascinating lives.

Review: The name “Cro-Magnon” inspires images of a snowbound world, mammoth hunting, and eerily alluring cave paintings. Who were these ancient people? In a word, they were us—the first anatomically modern humans. In Cro-Magnon, bestselling author Brian Fagan brings these early humans out of the deep freeze as he reveals human society in its infancy, facing enormous challenges—including a rival species of humans, the Neanderthals. For 10 millennia, Cro-Magnons lived side by side with Neanderthals—but, by using their superior intellects and tools, these ingenious problem solvers eventually extinguished their Neanderthal cousins.
Cro-Magnon captures the indomitable adaptability that has made Homo sapiens an unmatched success as a species.

Judi Dench
Publisher: St. Martins Press LLC, February 01, 2011
Review: One of the world’s most beloved actresses for more than 50 years, Dame Judi Dench has done it all, beguiling audiences early in her career with her role in Cabaret, entertaining thousands with her role in the BBC’s As Time Goes By, lording it over 007 as “M” in the James Bond films and more.
In And Furthermore, Dench looks back on her astonishing career, and her impish humor is in full display as she regales us with tales such as her pony’s scene-stealing flatulence in the film Mrs. Brown and explains why she loathes Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Also touching on her private life and supplemented by dozens of photographs, this is a thoroughly engaging look at the life and work of one of the great actresses of our time.

Publisher: Putnam Pub. Group, October 20, 2009
Review: It may be a week before Christmas, but Dr. Kay Scarpetta finds herself in an unholy mess. Her increased visibility as the senior forensic analyst for CNN is prompting unsettling on-the-air phone calls, particularly one from a former psychiatric patient of Benton Wesley’s. Is the suspicious package awaiting Kay when she returns home after the show a warning from the caller? Soon, the apparent threat on Kay’s life finds her embroiled in a surreal plot involving an actor accused of an unthinkable sex crime and the disappearance of a beautiful millionairess with whom her niece, Lucy, seems to have shared a secret past. Adding to the already considerable weight on Kay’s shoulders is the invitation from her CNN producer to host her own TV show to be called "The Scarpetta Factor." Kay is hesitant, fearing it could generate the illusion that she has some mythical quality to solve cases. If only it were so!
Fortunately for Kay, her support team happens to be gathered in New York—Marino at the NYPD; Benton Wesley at Bellevue; and Lucy pursuing her forensic computer investigations, as Patricia Cornwell’s The Scarpetta Factor takes us on yet another brilliant, page-turning thrill ride.

Hedy's Folly

The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World
Richard Rhodes
Publisher: Doubleday & Co. Inc. Div Random Hou, November 01, 2011
Review: Review by Geoffrey Wawro
Vienna-born Hedwig Kiesler, who went to Hollywood in the 1930s and became Hedy Lamarr—Delilah in Cecil B. De Mille’s blockbuster Samson and Delilah—was also a formidable inventor. Rhodes’ latest book is striking, for Hedy had little formal education beyond primary school. The book also delivers a striking portrait of the 1930s, when Europe competed with Hollywood for film and stage laurels, and someone like Hedy Kiesler could drift profitably between the two worlds. She finally left Europe in 1937 at age 24, in part because of the Nazi menace (she was Jewish), but chiefly to escape her rich husband Fritz Mandl, who was stifling her.
Rhodes’ account of Hedy’s marriage to Mandl (the first of six marriages for her) is equal parts titillating and instructive, delivering keen insights into the murky world of interwar arms dealing in Europe. The half-Jewish Mandl was CEO of Hirtenberger, a big Austrian arms manufacturer with clients in Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and elsewhere. Rhodes shows how Hedy picked up her inventive engineering streak while married to Mandl and hosting his countless dinner parties with generals, admirals, air marshals, war ministry secretaries and defense contractors. Hedy listened in on hours of conversation between her husband and his clients—on inventions like the Messerschmitt fighter, the Heinkel bomber, “pocket battleships” and diesel-electric submarines. She loved Mandl for his wealth and power, but also for his mind: “he had the most amazing brain… There was nothing he did not know.” She shared Mandl’s love of learning, and filed away the table talk in her pretty and intelligent head.
She left him in 1937, unable to stomach her loss of independence. “I was no longer Hedy Kiesler, an individual. But I was only the wife of Fritz Mandl.” Feeling “strangled to death by luxury,” she had an affair in St. Moritz with Erich Maria Remarque, and then decamped to America. With her usual flair for networking, she met Louis B. Mayer—the head of MGM Studios—on the way. Mayer gave her the screen name “Hedy Lamarr” as well as her first contract in Hollywood. While making movies, she and the composer George Antheil began inventing together. They worked on a frequency-hopping, spread-spectrum guidance system for glide bombs and torpedoes that was patented, but never procured by the U.S. Navy. Rhodes claims that the murderous U-boat wolf packs that sank passenger liners and unarmed merchant freighters aroused the sympathy of Lamarr and Antheil and their determination to invent a weapon that could rout the German surface and submarine fleet. Rhodes concludes the book by affirming that their frequency-hopping system is even today the guts of cordless phones, WiFi, cellphones and Bluetooth.
Readers will enjoy this unusual book, which hops back and forth across the war-torn Atlantic, and describes the unlikely intersection of entertainment and military technology in the hands of a beautiful Viennese savant and celebrity.

Fade to Midnight

Shannon McKenna
Publisher: Kensington Pub Corp, May 25, 2010
Review: Kev Larsen has no idea who he is. Years ago, he was found in an alley, his memory completely blank. But now it’s coming back. A violent accident has triggered something in his mind, unleashing a flood of terrifying memories…and leading him to a beautiful—and seductively sensual—angel by the name of Edie Parrish.
Edie knows that telling anyone about her psychic gifts puts her life at risk, but she knows she can trust Kev, and not just because they seem to share a common history. The bond they share is instantaneous, scorching…and impossible to deny. But so is the danger they face. And as Shannon McKenna’s Fade to Midnight heats up, one fact becomes abundantly clear: The horrors of his past aren’t over. They’ve only just begun….

Strawberry Rhubarb Tarts
1/4 cup dried sliced rhubarb
3/4 cup water, divided
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup dried sliced strawberries
4 tsp cornstarch
2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
12 baked tart shells
1. In a saucepan, combine rhubarb and 1/2 cup of the water; let stand for 30 minutes or until slightly softened. Stir in sugar and strawberries and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and boil gently, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes or until fruit is plump and tender and liquid is reduced by about half.
2. In a bowl, whisk cornstarch into remaining water. Drizzle into saucepan and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute or until sauce is thickened and clear. Transfer to a bowl and let cool. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours or for up to 1 day.
3. To serve, spoon fruit filling into tart shells.

Five Chiefs
Bild

A Supreme Court Memoir
John Paul Stevens
Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, October 03, 2011
Review: When he resigned from the Supreme Court in June 2010, Justice John Paul Stevens was the third-longest serving justice in American history (1975-2010). Only Justice William O. Douglas, whom Stevens succeeded, and Stephen Field have served on the Court for a longer time.
In Five Chiefs, Justice Stevens captures the inner workings of the Supreme Court through his personal experiences with the five chief justices with whom he interacted: Fred Vinson, Earl Warren, Warren Burger, William Rehnquist and John Roberts. Stevens reminisces of being a law clerk during Vinson’s tenure; a practicing lawyer for Warren; a circuit judge and junior justice for Burger; a contemporary colleague of Rehnquist; and a colleague of current Chief Justice John Roberts. Along the way, he reveals his views of some of the most significant cases that have been decided by the Court and its justices over the course of 60 years, from Vinson, who became chief justice in 1946 when Truman was president, to Roberts, who became chief justice in 2005.
Packed with intriguing anecdotes and stories about the Court, Five Chiefs is an unprecedented and historically significant inside look at justice at its most exalted.

Where You Stand in the Age of Obama
Bill O'Reilly
Publisher: William Morrow & Co, Inc., September 14, 2010
Review: Bill O’Reilly, three-time Emmy® Award-winning journalist and bestselling author, doesn’t mince words. He speaks his mind. And that’s never been truer than in Pinheads and Patriots, a provocative examination of the changes being wrought in the age of Obama…and the consequences they’ll have for all of us down the line. Offering thoughtful critiques of actions and policies of the most powerful people shaping our lives today, O’Reilly lavishes praise where it’s earned and condemnation where it’s needed, backing up his analyses with information culled from interviews with President Obama, his confrontations with Congressman Barney Frank and more. It’s an essential resource for all Americans trying to make sense of this time of change.
