A Novel
Honey B
Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, March 16, 2009
Review: Honey B is Mary B. Morrison, and who better than the chart-blazing New York Times bestselling author of Sexcapades and reigning queen of sex, sizzle and scandal to dole out such a deliciously satisfying story of cheating husbands and relationships on the rocks….
Herschel Henderson may have said "I do" to take gorgeous Nikki’s hand in marriage, but in reality, the only thing he vowed to do was to take her money. While he still goes along with all the dark sex games Nikki craves, he’s much more interested in getting it on with his mistress. Brian Flaw meant to love his wife till death do they part, but since he and the beautiful Michelle are both workaholics, he is easily bored by the one-note sex he has with her. And with such a diverse pool of sexy women constantly throwing themselves at Brian, he cannot resist temptation. Although Lexington Lewis vowed to Donna he’d stand by her for better or worse, their marriage has gotten so bad, there doesn’t seem to be any “better” left. These cheating husbands would rather honor their libidos than their vows, and all refuse to give up the sexual freedom they enjoyed as single men. But that’s about to get old. And fast

A Game of Thrones

George R.R. Martin
Publisher: Bantam, August 01, 1996
Review: 'My first George Martin book was Fevre Dream, from way back in the days when I was just a member of the SFBC. I've still got that book, and I've been searching for more of his stuff ever since. So as soon as A Game of Thrones came into the office, I snapped it up--and wished I could keep reading it forever. I feel like the Starks are my family now, and I even almost like Tyrion Lannister (who's something like a ruthless Miles Vorkosigan). If you love good fantasy, you owe it to yourself to read this book--if only to feel the shiver on your spine when you realize the true importance of the Stark family motto: "Winter is coming.''--Andy Wheeler, associate editor Long ago, when great dragons and wolves roamed the land, the seasons were thrown out of balance, creating a world where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime. Here, in the cold, vast forests of the North, where even summer brings snow, live the Starks of Winterfell, a family as unyielding as the land they were born to, and as fierce as the direwolf which graces their coat of arms. Soon, as winter descends upon the realm, the Starks will be swept up in a blizzard of mystery and tragedy, intrigue and adventure, as they and their rivals play the oldest game of all--the game of thrones.
The sight of the direwolf, dead, with six squirming pups--the same number as his own children--would have troubled a more superstitious man. But Ned Stark did not believe in omens. He believed in a man's duty to his home, his family and his king. And if the King was a good friend, all the better.
But some would deem it inauspicious that Ned's King was on his way to Winterfell that very day, to offer Ned the second most powerful seat in the realm.
It was the last thing in the world he wanted. If he accepted, he would have to journey south to King's Landing and live among vipers. Worse, he would have to leave Winterfell and his beloved family behind...and winter was coming. Still, one did not refuse the King--especially not Robert Barratheon, a bear of a man who preferred a warhammer to a sword in battle.
It would be a decision that would shape the fate of his family.
Eight-year-old Bran Stark loved to climb. Nothing could keep him from scaling the walls and towers of Winterfell like an enthusiastic spider, with just the tips of his fingers and toes to guide him. He would never fall, he had told his father...until the day he climbed the broken watchtower and overheard a conversation no one was meant to hear....
When you were born a dwarf--especially to a family such as the proud, powerful Lannisters of Casterly Rock--you could damn well say and do just about anything you had a mind to. A hobbled little man with a brutish brow and mismatched eyes, Tyrion Lannister knew his limitations, and his strengths. He'd never be a swordsman...but things were expected of him as brother of the Queen.
Set against a landscape as immediate and memorable as its finely-drawn cast of characters, A Game of Thrones is a masterpiece of storytelling that catches you up from the opening pages, grips you until the end, and leaves you yearning for more. (736 pp.)

Early Dawn

Catherine Anderson
Publisher: Nal Signet, Div Of Penguin Putnam, December 29, 2009
Review: Bestselling author Catherine Anderson outdoes herself with Early Dawn, an emotionally intense tale of red-hot passion and cold-blooded murder set on the western frontier.
Matthew Coulter was beaten, shot, and left for dead by the Sebastian gang, but that was nothing compared to the pain he felt when they killed his wife. Swearing that he wouldn’t rest until every last member of the gang was dead, he’s been hunting them for three years. And now, he’s finally close enough to get his revenge.
Eden Keegan is the kind of woman who would stand beside a man, never behind him, but she’s taken to her limits when she’s kidnapped by the Sebastian gang. Then, against all hope, she’s rescued in the middle of the night by a man with a hard glint in his eye. But is Coulter just another outlaw? He certainly looks like a scoundrel, but as they try to lose the Sebastians in the wilderness, she learns that under his rough exterior is a decent man who suddenly finds himself at a crossroads. Coulter knows that revenge can finally be his if he just turns to face his pursuers. If he fails, he dooms Eden to captivity…or worse. Now he has a choice to make. Settle the score…or surrender to his heart’s desire.

America's War in Afghanistan
Seth Jones
Publisher: W.W. Norton & Co. Inc., July 06, 2009
Review: Longtime Afghanistan expert and RAND analyst Seth G. Jones watched as American optimism evaporated after the defeat of the Taliban in 2001 and, just four years later, a new “war of a thousand cuts” had brought Afghanistan to its knees. With In the Graveyard of Empires, Jones harnesses important new historical research on insurgencies and integrates thousands of declassified government documents to offer a penetrating and definitive account of the American experience in Afghanistan, from the rise of the Taliban to the depths of the insurgency.
As Jones shows, the siphoning of resources to the Iraq war left U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan ineffectual and without support. Through interviews with prominent figures, including ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and commander Karl Eikenberry, Jones explains how a growing sanctuary for insurgents in Pakistan and a collapsing government in Kabul catalyzed the Taliban resurgence. Examining what has worked thus far—and what hasn’t—Jones argues that we must take a radically new approach to the war if the United States is to avoid the disastrous fate that has befallen every world power to enter the region, from Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union.

Discussing everything from the need to reform education and the promise and perils of modern technology, it’s a fascinating look at how we can make the American Dream a reality today.

Linda Lael Miller
Publisher: Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster, September 28, 2010
Review: A classic reborn, Willow was first published some 25 years ago, and was one of the novels that helped earn Linda Lael Miller the title “First Lady of the West.” Now, in this special edition, she revisits the story with a fresh eye, fleshing out the love scenes, subplots, and characters to give the book new depth and complexity.
Taking us back to 1883 Montana, the story follows Willow, a fiery young beauty who spent part of her childhood in an outlaw camp. Newly married to Gideon, she finds her wedded bliss turning to despair when she learns that he’s on a mission to capture an outlaw—a man who happens to be her brother. Now, she must decide: betray her family, or risk the love she has dreamed of all her life. Or is there another way?

Jon Clinch

Review: Jon Clinch, author of the prize-winning novel Finn, secures his status as a writer to watch with this powerful and utterly compelling tale of life, death and family in rural America.
Told in a chorus of voices that spans a generation, Kings of the Earth is a psychologically powerful narrative that hums with suspense as it draws us into the lives of the Proctor brothers, an elderly—and decidedly peculiar—trio living in a kind of crumbling stasis in their decaying upstate New York farm. It’s a solitary existence, one with few ties to the outside world, until one of them dies in his sleep and a state trooper—suspecting the other two of murder—launches an investigation that sheds harsh light on their hidden lives.

Brent Weeks
Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, August 25, 2010
Review: You helped set Brent Weeks securely in the fantasy firmament with your enthusiasm for his Night Angel Trilogy. Now get ready for The Black Prism—Book One of The Lightbringer Trilogy—as Weeks flexes his world-building chops in an astonishingly original universe.
In the Seven Satrapies, each color in the spectrum has its own magical attributes. Mages mostly specialize in one color of light, though some can manipulate two, three or even more. Gavin Guile is one of the rare few known to history who can work all colors at once. As such, he has become the Prism—the most powerful mage in the world, whose power, wit and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace with rival kingdom Tyrea.
But Prisms break under the strain of their magic, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live: five years to achieve five impossible goals. Then Guile discovers he has a son, born in Tyrea after the war that put him in power. It is a secret that could tear his world apart...a secret even more imperiled when he and the son he has never known are thrust into the middle of a burgeoning civil war.
Weeks has honed his craft and it shows; The Black Prism is a tour de force in post-LOTR fantasy storytelling.

Controlling Emotions—So They Don't Control You
Joyce Meyer
Publisher: Hachette Book Group USA, September 06, 2011
Review: Living Beyond Your Feelings could be one of the most important books you’ll ever read. In it, Joyce Meyer, author of many bestsellers, including Battlefield of the Mind, helps us understand the many feelings we all experience. She examines how our brain processes and stores thoughts and memories—and then, emotion by emotion, explains how we can manage our responses to those emotions. By doing that, Joyce gives us practical ways for effectively managing the feelings that can destroy our relationships and wreak havoc on our lives.
The average person has 70,000 thoughts every day, many of these thoughts triggering a corresponding emotion. No wonder we often feel like we’re controlled by our emotions—Living Beyond Your Feelings shows you how you can control them. Blending biblical wisdom and her own personal anecdotes with the latest psychological research, Joyce discusses the impact of stress, anger, sadness, grief and guilt on our physical and emotional health—and the benefits of happiness.
With Living Beyond Your Feelings, you’ll have a practical, life-changing “toolbox” for choosing to do what’s right no matter how you feel and make the decisions that will release God’s best into your life.

Den of Thieves

Book One of the Ancient Blades Trilogy
David Chandler
Publisher: HarperCollins, July 26, 2011
Review: Once there was a knight named Croy. Croy was bearer of an ancient blade with a powerful destiny. He was also a bit naive. He believed in honor. He believed that people are fundamentally good and will do the right thing if given the chance.
Unfortunately, Croy lived in the city of Ness, a thriving medieval city of 50,000 people, all of whom would gleefully stab you in the back…if given the chance. Ness was also the home of Malden, a clever thief who lived by his wits, disarming cunning traps, sneaking past sleeping guards and running away very fast whenever people tried to kill him. Which was often. One time, Malden was recruited to steal an enchanted crown. In the process, he set off its guardian demon, and that’s how Croy and Malden met.
Shrewd thief and noble knight probably would never have become friends if it weren’t for Cythera. Cythera is a witch with a problem: She’s under a double-whammy of a spell. If anyone touches her, they could die. And despite herself she can’t stop Croy and Malden from falling in love with her...both at the same time.
Laden with twists and turns, high adventure and a little romance, Den of Thieves by David Chandler is good old-fashioned rollicking fun!

Review: Switching venues from the courtroom to the newsroom, Edgar® Award winner and bestselling author Lisa Scottoline breaks new ground in Look Again, a searing and emotional thriller that plays on a mother’s worst nightmare.
When Ellen Gleeson, a Philadelphia journalist and single mom, gets a “Have You Seen This Child?” flyer in the mail, she almost throws it away, but something about it makes her look again, and her heart stops. The boy in the photo is identical to her adopted 3-year-old, Will: same sky blue eyes, same small nose, same lopsided grin.
Ellen’s every instinct tells her to deny the similarity between the boys, because she knows her adoption was lawful; as a reporter, she knows she won’t be able to stop thinking about the photo until she figures out the truth.
While she follows up a story about a family abduction, she can’t shake the question: If Will rightfully belongs to someone else, should she keep him or give him up? As Ellen investigates, she uncovers clues no one was meant to discover, and when she digs too deep, she risks losing her own life—and that of the son she loves.
Packed with twists that will throw you for a loop, Look Again is Lisa Scottoline at the top of her game.

The Perfect Nazi

Uncovering My Grandfather's Secret Past
Martin Davidson
Publisher: Putnam Pub Group/Mbr of Penguin, March 01, 2011
Review: As a child, Martin Davidson sensed there was something different about his German grandfather, Bruno Langbehn. He was told that Langbehn had been an unassuming dentist in Berlin during World War II. Yet there was a distinct air of mystery surrounding Langbehn, a proud, blustery man who often hinted at a dark, secret past. Although intrigued, Davidson was too afraid to pry. In 1992, Langbehn died and Davidson discovered what his family had not wanted him to know: his grandfather had been a Nazi SS officer.
He was flummoxed by the revelation and desperate for more information. Relying on investigative skills he honed as a documentary producer for the BBC, Davidson delved deep into his grandfather’s past. “I was driven by curiosity. But trepidation, too,” he admits. “Having once embarked, there was no turning back. I was determined, once and for all, to know the truth.” The results of his investigation are revealed in The Perfect Nazi. The book draws from an astonishing cache of personal documents, Nazi records and eyewitness accounts to paint a portrait of a man whose story moved lockstep in time with the rise and fall of the Nazi Party.
Langbehn joined the Bund as a child, graduated to the Brownshirts and signed up for the party as soon as it had become legal, seven years before Hitler came to power. According to Davidson, his grandfather fit the archetype on which the Nazi Party was founded: the middle-ranking, cogwheel-oiling, paper-pushing, fanatical fascist. “He was a very particular kind of Nazi, but one whose story rarely ever gets told,” writes Davidson. “It’s the willing agents, the factotums, the managers like Bruno who are taken for granted, who function as unthinking givens. They were there at the beginning, were crucial at every juncture, and were there at the end—and beyond. The Nazi story is inconceivable without them.
Davidson also considers the lives and careers of other relatives who made different choices during the war. What he finds is that a number of them were on the wrong side of the greatest moral divide of modern times. In investigating his own family history, Davidson manages to illuminate the complex of emotions and calculations that caused millions of Germans to embrace an insane ideology of mass murder. When he learns that Langbehn was in Hungary in 1944, the author is forced to confront the horrifying possibility that his grandfather helped Adolf Eichmann send 700,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.
Part personal quest, part memoir and part WWII chronicle, The Perfect Nazi sheds light on one of history’s darkest hours—and one man’s struggle to come to grips with his family’s dark past. It’s an absorbing, deeply revealing work.

Mr. Chartwell

Rebecca Hunt
Publisher: Dial Press/Dell/Div. of Random House, February 08, 2011
Review: In this utterly original novel, Winston Churchill wakes up one more in July 1964 to find a dark “presence” standing in the room, staring at him ominously. It’s Mr. Chartwell. Not long after, Esther Hammerhans, a British librarian at the House of Commons, answers the door and finds a monstrous silhouette roughly the size of a mattress. He, too, is Mr. Chartwell.
Charismatic and endlessly seductive, Mr. Chartwell magically unites the eminent statesman and the vulnerable young woman… but can they withstand his stranglehold on their lives? Can they explain who he is, and why he’s come to visit? In this hilarious novel, Rebecca Hunt explores how two lives collide as Mr. Chartwell’s motives prove to be dark, indeed.

The Journal of Helene Berr
Bild

Helene Berr
Publisher: The Weinstein Company, LLC, November 11, 2008
Review: How will the world be cleansed unless it is made to understand the full extent of the evil it is doing?” So writes Helene Berr in the diary that has become a publishing sensation around the world; a work that has proven to be an important literary contribution to the history of the Holocaust, written by a gifted young writer who would become a victim herself.
Translated by David Bellos, The Journal of Helene Berr was written by an exceptionally intelligent young woman who was among the many French Jews funneled through Drancy, the Parisian collection camp, to Nazi death camps. She was a student of English Literature at the Sorbonne and was deported to Auschwitz with her mother and father in 1944, eventually dying in Bergen-Belsen in April 1945, four days before the British liberated the camp.
The book traces her development as a college student reading Yeats and Shakespeare to her eventual arrest and the grave conditions of her life thereafter. Throughout the heartrending tale, the young author peppers her narrative with a disarming philosophical air, declaring, “I am leading a posthumous life.” Now, with the publication of this journal, that life can be revealed to the world.

Strategy and the U.S. Civil War
Donald Stoker
Publisher: Oxford University Press, July 20, 2010
Review: Of the tens of thousands of books exploring virtually every aspect of the Civil War, surprisingly little has been written about what was the determining factor in the outcome of the conflict: differences in Union and Southern strategy. In The Grand Design, historian Donald Stoker provides a comprehensive and often surprising account of strategy as it evolved between Fort Sumter and Appomattox.
Battles tend to dominate Civil War literature, but most authors explore the clashes as they played out, not as they were conceived. Stoker begins by reminding us that that strategy is different from tactics and operations. In terms of successful strategy, relationships between civilian and military authorities are key, and the Civil War is an incomparable illustration of this essential truth. Using this premise as a jumping-off point, Stoker examines how Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis clearly identified their political goals and worked with their generals to craft the military means to achieve them—or how they often failed to do so. For example, Stoker shows that Davis, despite a West Point education and experience as secretary of war, failed as a strategist by losing control of the political side of the war. His invasion of Kentucky was a crucial turning point that shifted the loyalties and vast resources of the border states to the Union. Lincoln, in contrast, evolved a clear strategic vision, but he failed for years to make his generals implement it. At the level of generalship, Stoker notes that Robert E. Lee correctly determined the Union’s center of gravity, but proved mistaken in his assessment of how to destroy it. Stoker also presents evidence that the Union could have won the war in 1862, had it followed the grand plan of the much-derided general, George B. McClellan.
Stoker also looks at how the ultimate aims of the Union and the Confederacy shaped strategy. Although the Civil War has been called the first “total war,” it was the Union alone whose aims were total—the complete destruction of the Confederacy—whereas the South was fighting for more limited objectives. Clausewitz’s belief that a war’s political goals determine the scale of its waging sheds new light on the Civil War’s ultimate outcome. Lincoln understood his politics clearly—and correctly employed military means to achieve them—whereas Jefferson Davis utterly failed to match his military strategy to political ends.
Historians have often argued that the North's advantages in population and industry ensured certain victory. In The Grand Design, Stoker reasserts the centrality of the overarching military ideas—the strategy—on each side, arguing convincingly that it was strategy that determined the war’s outcome.

A More Unbending Battle

Peter Nelson
Publisher: Basic Books Inc., May 01, 2009
Review: Recruited from all walks of Harlem life, the 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African-American regiment mustered to fight in WWI—but the regiment had to fight alongside the French because America’s segregation policy prohibited them from serving alongside white U.S. soldiers.
In A More Unbending Battle, Peter Nelson chronicles the little-known story of the 369th. Named “The Harlem Hellfighters” by their enemies, they spent longer than any other American unit in combat, were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine and showed extraordinary valor on the battlefield. Replete with legendary heroics—as well as accounts of the rampant racism the regiment faced—A More Unending Battle is a thrilling look at a unique group of fighters.

The Greater Journey
Bild

David McCullough
Publisher: Simon & Schuster, May 24, 2011
Review: As David McCullough writes, “Not all pioneers went west.” In The Greater Journey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author tells the story of the many gifted American artists and scientists who lived and studied in Paris from 1830 to 1900—and changed not only their own lives, but the course of American literature, medicine, art, architecture, music and dance. It was a time when living abroad was not as simple as it is today. The experience was reserved for those courageous and willing enough to face the adversities that accompanied such an intrepid undertaking.
The realities of long-distance travel, especially by sea, were daunting and often perilous. Few of these adventurous souls had ever been to sea. But the City of Light offered these daring Americans a vibrant culture unlike anything available at home. In Paris, they could live and work in the company of others of like minds and aspirations. They would also be surrounded by master artists and celebrated thinkers. As McCullough explains, the Americans who traveled to Paris did so not just for their own improvement, but to benefit their country.
Many of these central characters are well known—James Fenimore Cooper, Samuel F.B. Morse, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary Cassatt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Other lesser-known figures include Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female physician in the United States; Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a gifted pianist who launched his career performing in Paris at age 15; and Elihu Washburne, a heroic American ambassador who remained at his post through the Franco-Prussian War.
Writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain and Henry James found inspiration in the treasures of the Louvre and in the crowds milling about the city's boulevards and gardens. Samuel F.B. Morse got the idea for the first telegraph while studying painting in Paris.
It was Charles Sumner’s desire for knowledge that drew him to the legendary Sorbonne. There, he saw black students with the same ambition he had, and when he returned home, he would become the most powerful, unyielding voice for abolition in the U.S. Senate, almost at the cost of his life.
Medical student Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote home of his toil and the exhilaration in "being at the center of things" in what was then the medical capital of the world. From all they learned in Paris, Holmes and his fellow Americans were to exert lasting influence on their respective professions at home. The exploits of these pioneers are, in McCullough’s words, “a big part of the American story, much of which has been too long overlooked.” The Greater Journey pays homage to these remarkable men and women who helped shape our country.

Patrick Henry

First Among Patriots
Thomas S. Kidd
Publisher: Basic Books Inc., November 22, 2011
Review: Review by Lucas A. Powe, Jr.
Give me liberty or give me death.” Perhaps that is the most famous oral statement in American political history and it guarantees that Patrick Henry will be remembered from generation to generation. It is no accident that Henry came up with such a memorable quote. He was known as the finest orator of his time and it provided him with true influence in the political arena. It also helped make him rich as a lawyer, one known far more for his ability to sway jurors than his understanding of the law. In our current period where every notable political figure of the founding generation is finding a good biographer, Henry has found his own in Thomas Kidd’s Patrick Henry: First Among Patriots.
Beginning with the Stamp Act crisis, where it was suggested that his opposition language bordered on treason, Henry worked his way to the top of Virginia politics. He served three years as Virginia’s governor both at the beginning of the Revolution and then again during the Confederation period although besides his famous quotation he is probably best known as a major opponent of adoption of the Constitution. In the latter case he justified his action on the ground of the new government’s threat to liberty—but there is no doubt that he was also concerned with the ability of a stronger government to bargain away American rights to the Mississippi River. Henry was a Virginian (as were so many others) rather than (like Alexander Hamilton) an American.
When Henry first married (he had two wives and 17 children), his father-in-law gave him a 300-acre plantation with six slaves. Like many of the Virginians—and especially Thomas Jefferson—Henry was fully aware of the inconsistencies in the demand for liberty of people who fundamentally denied the liberty of the others they owned. If he were ever to do anything about his concerns, that day ended when Virginia’s colonial governor offered freedom to any slaves who would run away and then fight against the rebellious colonists. As a rich man, Henry died with a large number of slaves none of whom he freed in life or death.
Henry had a very interesting position on religion and the state. He believed in complete religious toleration (something that stood him in good shape with Baptists). But he also believed that each member of society should contribute money to a religion of choice. Thus he unsuccessfully opposed Jefferson’s and Madison’s efforts to disestablish the Anglican church.
Although Patrick Henry is not a thick biography, it is a life and times biography. Thus Thomas Kidd usefully situates Henry in the larger fascinating issues of his time in a book that is a pleasure to read.

The Last Fish Tale

The Fate of the Atlantic and Survival in Gloucester, America's Oldest Fishing Port and Most Original Town
Mark Kurlansky
Publisher: Ballantine Books Inc./Random House, June 10, 2008
Review: Taking us from Viking voyages a millennium ago to the modern era, the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed “micro-histories” Cod, Salt and The Big Oyster sets his sights on the most emblematic of New England’s fishing towns—Gloucester, Massachusetts—to tell the dramatic, and tragic, story of a way of life that took four centuries to build, but could disappear in a matter of decades.
Expertly tracing the development of Gloucester’s fishing industry—from the advent of large schooners that allowed fishermen to ply their trade as far away as the Grand Banks, to the thousands of fishermen lost in storms, to Gloucester’s present-day woes—The Last Fish Tale is Mark Kurlansky’s most colorful, personal, and important book yet.

Danielle Steel
Publisher: Delacorte Press/Div of Random House, July 19, 2011
Review: Famous as the queen of style and gracious living, Valerie Wyatt put in 35 years of hard work to reach the top. And at the top she is, ensconced in a magnificent Fifth Avenue penthouse where trainers, hairdressers and, yes, cosmetic surgeons, come and go at her will. But despite her arresting beauty and youthful appearance, Valerie can’t evade the glaring truth that she’s turning 60.
Meanwhile, Valerie’s equally ambitious daughter, April, has also achieved great success. At the tender age of 30, she is the proud chef and owner of a popular Manhattan restaurant. Yet, like her mother, April finds her age daunting and still single, she wishes her menu included a husband and kids.
Twelve years after retiring from the NFL Jack Adams is the most charismatic sports analyst in the business with no end of twenty-somethings clinging to his 50-year-old arm. But all the accompanying aches and pains of a rough career—and age—have changed Jack’s perspective.
A stunning act of violence and an unforeseen blessing makes Danielle Steel’s Happy Birthday a novel brimming with insight and warmth as these three people, approaching their memorable milestones, discover life’s greatest gifts.

Catherine of Siena

A Passionate Life
Don Brophy
Publisher: United Tribes Media Inc, August 01, 2010
Review: Like her compatriot Francis of Assisi, Catherine of Siena is best known around the world as a great mystic and saint, reformer and teacher. Born in 1347, she lived to witness a cavalcade of momentous events, including the bubonic plague, famine, and the Hundred Years War that ravaged Europe. The daughter of a Sienese dyer, Catherine began having visions at an early age. At sixteen, she joined the Dominican order and devoted herself to helping the poor and infirm. At the time the popes were under the influence of King Philip the Fair of France and resided in Avignon. Unlike France and England, Italy had no ruler to serve as a figurehead. The Renaissance was in its first bloom, but the city-states of Italy were in disarray. It was a dismal time that cried out for peace and order. Catherine rose to the occasion, working tirelessly to restore order to a fractured Italian city-state system, and bring the Holy See back to Rome. Although unschooled and semi-literate, she possessed enormous fortitude and personal magnetism.
Set against the rich backdrop of 14th-century Europe, Catherine of Siena presents a moving, lucid, and revealing portrait of the strong-minded, fiery young woman who campaigned for peace and struggled to reform the Church. Don Brophy illuminates Catherine’s public life, describing in detail the political and social world she inhabited. He also closely examines her personal life and religious faith. “In the past it was common for biographies of saintly figures to describe miracles and visions as if they were historical facts,” explains Brophy. Adopting a more objective, nuanced interpretation, he views such spiritual phenomena as a form of symbolic language.
Catherine’s motivations for engaging in events of her day flowed out of her conviction that she was called to the task by God,” he writes. She contended with popes, monarchs, and ordinary citizens—cajoling, begging, and at times commanding people to do her will. She promoted peace among the warriors of her native Tuscany, strove to reform the Church and helped persuade Pope Gregory XI to return from Avignon to Rome. She shared her thoughts on spirituality in her letters and in her masterwork, The Dialogue. For all this she was praised and reviled—revered as a saint by her friends and disciples, and nearly assassinated by enemies. Exhausted by her work and austerities, she died at the age of 33, all consumed by her inner fire.
Canonized in 1461 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, Catherine of Siena remains one of the most beloved spiritual figures. Well-researched and based on the latest scholarship, this accessible biography sheds new light on the celebrated medieval saint.
