Apocalypse Not Why Everything You Know About 2012, Nostradamus and the Rapture Is Wrong John Greer Publisher: Cleis Press, Inc., September 13, 2011 Review: For almost 3,000 years apocalypse prophecies have convinced people all over the world that the future is about to give them the world they want instead of the world they’ve got. All the end-time prophecies splashed across the media in every age have had something else in common: every one of them has been wrong. With Apocalypse Not, acclaimed author John Michael Greer offers a lively and engaging survey of predictions about the end of the world, along with the failed dreams and nightmares that have clustered around them. Greer cuts a wide swath, as he highlights a host of stories: the birth of the apocalypse meme out of archaic star myths in the ancient Middle East; the failed end-time prophecies of Nostradamus, Mother Shipton and other famous prophets; the long and murky road from the Great Pyramid to today’s Rapture beliefs; the central place of Bible prophecies in the life of the world's most notorious Satanist; the tangled interconnections between end-time beliefs and the UFO phenomenon; and the real origins of the belief in apocalypse in 2012 (which turn out not to be Mayan at all). Apocalypse Not traces a remarkable and often alarming facet of human cultural history. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Is It Just Me? Or Is It Nuts Out There? In 1936, Ray Daves joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and went from there to the navy, where he became a radio expert, soon finding himself in the momentary peacefulness of pre-war Pearl Harbor. Serving aboard the USS Yorktown, Daves experienced some of the war’s most ferocious naval combat. In vivid detail, he describes the horror of Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Coral Sea and his rescue at sea following the Yorktown’s sinking at the Battle of Midway. Equal parts vim, vigor and fond reminiscence, Radioman is a truly inspiring account of the war in the Pacific. The Women Jefferson Loved Virginia Scharff Publisher: Harper Collins Pub., Inc. "Don'T Us, November 01, 2010 Review: A fastidious gatekeeper, Thomas Jefferson constructed a seemingly impenetrable wall between his public legacy and his private life. He was methodical about his correspondence, copying and filing away some letters, and destroying others that he deemed to be too private for public eyes. Sometimes, he closed his letters by entreating the recipient to “throw this in the fire.” His family carried on a tradition of carefully maintaining his privacy. As a result, early biographies of Jefferson failed to present a complete picture of the man. Not surprisingly, Jefferson’s most closely guarded secrets all had to do with the women in his life. As they’ve emerged over the years, the details of his intricate and unorthodox personal life have proven to be both intriguing and somewhat scandalous. Breaking down the barrier between public and private histories, The Women Jefferson Loved presents an intriguing new portrait of the third president. Historian and author of Twenty Thousand Roads: Women, Movement, and the West Virginia Scharff draws from a wealth of newly available sources, including Jefferson’s own memorandums, family letters and artifacts from archaeological excavations of Jefferson’s Shadwell and Monticello homes. She takes a unique biographical approach, examining her subject through the eyes of the women who were closest to him. Jefferson, reveals Scharff, was not only deeply attached to the women in his life, but was also profoundly influenced by them. Jefferson lived out his long life deeply entrenched in a multi-generational web of biological, social and emotional connections between his white family and the black family he sired with his slave. His was a house literally divided, with the white half of the family free, and the black half of the family designated as slaves. Separated by race but related by blood, the diverse group of women included Jefferson’s mother, Jane Randolph; his wife, Martha; her half-sister Sally Hemings, his slave mistress; his daughters; and his granddaughters. Rather than perfect role models, they “were flawed humans with fascinating stories, and they mattered,” explains Scharff. “Their lives, their revolutions, their vulnerabilities shaped the choices Jefferson made, from the selection of words and ideas in his Declaration, to the endless building of his mountaintop mansion, to the vision of a great agrarian nation that powered his Louisiana Purchase. This accessible one-volume biography illuminates how the women in this Founding Father’s life helped shape his ideas and his vision for the country. Beneath the veneer, Jefferson was both “vulnerable and knowable, a man who makes sense, a man who belongs to us all,” contends Schraff. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Tempted P.C. She became “an accidental politician” when a state-mandated education curriculum stressed political correctness over academic excellence. Her state senator refused to object, so she challenged him for his senate seat—and won. That was the start of her journey from the state senate, to the U.S. Congress, to her campaign for president. She speaks from the heart about limited government, the sanctity of life and marriage, free enterprise and the need to confront America’s enemies. This book will show you why Michele believes ordinary people can take on the establishment—and win—just as she has done. Among the worst of these makeshift prisons was Libby, a former tobacco warehouse where 1,200 Union officers slept without blankets on the bare floor and subsisted on scraps of cornbread and rancid meat. Many died, most endured; the most audacious plotted their escape. Joseph Wheelan, a prolific biographer and former AP editor, recounts the improbable tale of 109 courageous officers in Libby Prison Breakout—the first book to chronicle this amazing escape in depth. Charting the transformation of stately Richmond, Virginia, from antebellum gentility to wartime industrial center, Wheelan depicts the citizens’ attempts to cope with mounting privations as the Confederate Army commandeered Richmond’s food, clothing and goods. Martial law, protests, food riots and harsh countermeasures nurtured among Richmond’s populace a seething hatred of “the Yankee,” an enmity that would color the treatment of prisoners from the North. With prisoner exchanges at a standstill, Union POWs could scarcely hope for a timely release. And while the Union Army’s treatment of Confederate POWs was constrained by the Lieber Code (an antecedent to the Geneva Convention), no such code of conduct shielded Union prisoners from a prison system that “at times seemed expressly designed to induce suffering. The often highly educated officers proved resourceful at coping with their captivity, but disease, lice, cruelty, overcrowding and sheer boredom made escape an increasingly urgent prospect. In November 1863, two recently captured Union officers, Colonel Thomas Ellwood Rose and Major A.G. Hamilton, began to dig a 55-foot tunnel under Libby Prison. Leading 107 of their fellow captives, they fled in the chill of winter through the heart of the Confederate homeland, with Rebel soldiers in hot pursuit. Their successful escape lifted Northern morale, and their subsequent Congressional testimony, detailing their cruel and degrading treatment, led to the imposition of harsh measures against Rebel POWs. Drawing from primary sources including letters, journals, prison records and even issues of the prisoners’ weekly “newspaper,” Wheelan makes this little-known historical event feel palpable and current. The author does not flinch from depicting the ghastly human cost of war, nor does he give short shrift to the tale’s colorful characters—such as Col. Abel Streight, a man of imposing physical presence, formidable intellect and larger-than-life personality; or the one-woman “spy ring” of Elizabeth Van Lew. Libby Prison Breakout is a valuable contribution to Civil War historiography, and a richly rewarding reading experience. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Sacred Trash Adina Hoffman Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, April 05, 2011 Review: The three figures poring over bits of rag-paper and parchment could barely contain their excitement. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the leaves of paper spread out before them on the dining room table were of tremendous historical value. Twin Presbyterian Scottish sisters Agnes Lewis and Margaret Gibson had brought the leaves back from Egypt. They invited the Romanian-born Jewish scholar Solomon Schechter to examine the leaves. On that May day in 1896, the group met in Cambridge, England, where Schechter confirmed the women’s suspicions: the leaves were indeed significant. He recognized them as belonging to the original Hebrew “Book of Wisdom. In Sacred Trash, acclaimed essayist Adina Hoffman and award-winning translator Peter Cole tell the story of the recovery of the most vital cache of Hebrew manuscripts ever discovered. The manuscripts were found in a geniza in the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo. Hebrew for “hiding place,” a geniza is a repository for worn-out texts which could not be destroyed because they contain the name of God. Many of the manuscripts contained writings the sages considered heretical. The Cairo find featured a number of invaluable biblical and Talmudic texts—texts that provided a window into the social and economic history of the medieval Middle East. Additionally, the geniza contained 200 poems penned by the celebrated Hebrew poet Judah Halevi and writings by the influential medieval Jewish scholar Moses ben Maimon, often referred to as the “Second Moses. A handful of scholars had explored the geniza prior to 1896, but it was Lewis and Gibson, who shared a passion for philology and spoke 12 languages between them, who brought worldwide attention to the archive. Their trip to the Cairo geniza was the unlikely start to what would prove a remarkable, continent-hopping, century-crossing saga, one that in many ways has revolutionized our sense of what it means to lead a Jewish life. The discovery has since been likened in importance to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the 20th century. Weaving together unforgettable portraits of Lewis and Gibson, Schechter and the other scholar-heroes of this drama with explorations of the medieval documents themselves, Hoffman and Cole tell a gripping tale of exploration, intrigue and redemption. The authors draw from the contents of the Cairo geniza—including letters and poems, wills and marriage contracts, prescriptions, prayers, trousseau lists, bibles, money orders, children’s primers, rabbinic responsa, amulets and receipts—to present a panoramic view of a vibrant Mediterranean Judaism. Sacred Trash is both an enthralling adventure and an exceptional meditation on 900 years of Jewish life and culture. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Civil War Wives The Lives & Times of Angelina Grimke Weld, Varina Howell Davis & Julia Dent Grant Carol Berkin Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc./Random House, September 01, 2009 Review: In Civil War Wives, historian Carol Berkin, author of the acclaimed Revolutionary Mothers, tells the stories of three fascinating 19th-century wives. Her first subject, Angelina Grimke Weld, was a successful abolitionist orator before she married fellow abolitionist Theodore Weld. The next two, Varina Howell Davis, the wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Julia Dent Grant, wife of Civil War general and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, were more completely defined by their marriages. Examined together, these three women’s marriages provide unique perspectives on the turbulent times they lived through and on the social forces that guided and constrained the women of the day. Each of these wives left behind significant written records, allowing their stories to be heard in their own voices, rather than filtered through their famous husbands’ commentaries. And each story is fascinating. Angelina Grimke began life as a pampered and self-absorbed child of South Carolina’s slaveholding planter elite, then renounced her family’s values to become one of the most effective antislavery speakers of the 1830s and one of the first Americans to demand equality for women. Yet when she married her mentor, the abolitionist Theodore Weld, she abandoned her career as a public advocate for a life as wife and mother. Varina Howell, a child of Mississippi’s social elite, had an independent spirit that drew the disapproval of her husband and made her ill-suited to be the first lady of the Confederacy, yet served her well when she was forced to lobby for her husband’s release from prison after the war and made her a great social success when she moved to New York City after her husband’s death. And in Julia Dent Grant’s story we see the domestic archetype of the 19th-century American woman. The daughter of a successful Missouri merchant, Julia Dent lived a childhood she described as “one long summer of sunshine, flowers and smiles,” was swept off her feet by the man she loved, and sacrificed herself completely for her husband and his career. Only after she was widowed did she, in taking upon the task of memorializing her husband, finally find her own voice. Berkin finds common threads in these stories: all three women were born into slaveholding families but ended their lives in the free society of the Northeast. And they all had to grapple with—and resist or accept—the 19th-century ideology that regarded men and women as occupying separate spheres, with the latter always measured against an idealization of “true womanhood. Drawing from diaries, letters, essays, speeches and memoirs, Berkin brings these wives to vivid life, giving us an intimate look at their famous relationships, and revealing the joys and hardships of being a 19th-century woman. Filled with true tales of the living and dubious legends of the dead, Rag and Bone introduces you to a California hippie who ended up in a Jerusalem convent because of a nun’s disembodied hand, a French forensic expert who travels the metro with the rib of a saint and more. Har., February 01, 2009 Review: What becomes of former U.S. presidents? In Citizen-in-Chief we learn that although ex-presidents have never exactly been given a defined role in public and political life, their contributions are often many and varied—from Thomas Jefferson’s founding of the University of Virginia, to John Quincy Adams’ battles against slavery as a congressman, to William Howard Taft’s service on the Supreme Court. While it’s true that most of our Founding Fathers wound up flat broke, today’s former presidents earn millions. Modern “exes”—typified by Carter and Clinton—have redefined the “ex-presidency,” amassing “such large portfolios of diplomatic and humanitarian services that they stand in a class by themselves. Knopf, Inc./Random House, August 18, 2009 Review: Janet Soskice’s The Sisters of Sinai is the story of two unlikely and unsung heroines of the effort to discover the Bible as originally written. In 1892, identical twin sisters from Scotland made one of the most important scriptural discoveries of modern times. Combing the library of St. Catherine’s Monastery at Mount Sinai, they found one of the earliest known copies of the Gospels in ancient Syriac, a dialect spoken by Jesus. The Sisters of Sinai is the account of how two women without university degrees uncovered and translated this text, bringing a biblical treasure to world attention. This is a compelling story of the human spirit as the sisters became renowned scriptural authorities, despite their lack of formal training. BUY NOW!!! ========================= Richard M. Nixon The American Presidents Series Elizabeth Drew Publisher: Times Books, May 29, 2007 Review: When it comes to the art of political warfare, the epithet “Nixonian” is reserved for those figures suspected of playing the dirtiest tricks or harboring the most paranoid and destructive beliefs. The term’s progenitor, Richard Milhous Nixon, fit the bill perfectly. A socially awkward, deeply introverted man, Nixon had few friends, was virtually incapable of small talk, and despised meeting people, or “pressing the flesh,” as he put it. He was insecure, self-pitying, vindictive, angry, suspicious, and yes, sometimes Nixon was literally paranoid. He was capable of holding and nurturing grudges and resentments for years, periodically lashing out at his enemies, both real and perceived. But as veteran Washington, D.C., journalist and author Elizabeth Drew writes in this penetrating and surprising new biography, “Nixon was much more than the cartoon figure with the perpetual five o’clock shadow.” Indeed, though his presidency is seen almost entirely through the prism of Watergate and impeachment, Nixon accomplished far more than he is usually given credit for. Furthermore, despite his legendary sense of self-pity, Nixon was “amazingly resilient to the end.” Not only did he survive vast and resounding defeats—nearly all of which would have completely crushed most other politicians—but he kept returning to the political stage, creating multiple “New Nixons” for the public, some of whom loved him, some of whom loved to hate him. How did this difficult and politically improbable figure become America's 37th president? Drew argues that in addition to his remarkable political and emotional resilience, “Nixon displayed extraordinary grit.” He was a tireless worker, a politician who studied and memorized the country on a district-by-district basis, always doing favors for other politicians, and always expecting their support as payment. Tracing Nixon’s career from his California youth to his rise within the ranks of the Republican Party and his growing reputation as a fierce political fighter and outspoken Cold Warrior, Drew also devotes significant attention to Nixon’s more progressive legacy, including most notably his creation as president of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. But as Drew argues, the seeds of Nixon’s downfall were sown from the start. “The mixing of his psyche with the presidency,” she writes, “made for a poisonous brew, with tragic consequences, as he became the first president to be driven from office. A provocative and highly revealing portrait of one of America’s most controversial and divisive leaders, this riveting volume is a superb addition to the acclaimed American Presidents Series. The author’s life was actually just as nuanced and fascinating as his fiction—he was a doctor, writer and a spiritualist who grew up relatively impoverished, under the shadow of a father who was haunted by mental illness and alcoholism. Doyle had limited success in selling his stories until Sherlock Holmes became a literary phenomenon, turning the author into an overnight sensation. As indicated in over 1,500 letters to family and friends, the author actually felt the popularity of these stories harmed his reputation as a serious artist. Biographer Russell Miller had unlimited access to these letters while writing The Adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle, a fascinating account of one of the world’s genuine creative giants. Little-known details of the man are revealed on every page, including accounts of Doyle’s participation in the Boer War, and his affair with another woman while his wife was dying of tuberculosis. This is an utterly absorbing account of a truly complicated man. Current understanding of our universe dictates that all matter will eventually thin out to zero density, with huge black holes finally evaporating away into massless energy. Penrose turns around this picture of the universe’s “heat death,” arguing how the expected ultimate fate of our accelerating, expanding universe can actually be reinterpreted as the Big Bang of a new one.
